problem with receiving sms

Good morning all,
best wishes for users of Inreach products...
I have a problem with the reception of the sms that I send from a Mini 2, I specify that I have two models and that I have the same problem with both...
with my old Mini 1, there was no problem with receiving sms, I sent pre-recorded sms from the Mini 1 directly or from Explore,
with the Mini 2 at the beginning, I proceeded in the same way, I coupled my Mini 2 with my Montana 700 and my S22 Ultra, I could use the M700 for a fast sending of pre-recorded messages or a new sms, I found the conversation in Explore on my S22U, but Garmin made several updates and they introduced Messenger,
we can therefore send sms from: Explore, Messenger, from my M700 or from the Mini 2, it's starting to get complicated...
wanting to make it simple and possibly be able to lend my M700 and the Mini 2 without having to load applications on a third-party smartphone, I thought it would work but since that day, I realized that I could no longer receive text messages on a basic phone which would not have the Explore or Messenger app,
I hope that Garmin is not going to impose one of these applications "just" to receive sms, it was easy to receive them, fast sending even from the Mini 2 and reception directly in the sms application of the telephone concerned, sms to which or could respond directly, going through an application would complicate sending, since Messenger duplicates the application installed on the smartphone.
another problem too, I realized that on the M700, I could no longer send new sms because if I press "new sms" it switches to the list of contacts that I have synchronized with Explore, if I don't I can't use Explore, I can only send an sms with the contacts present,
before by pressing "new message", the keyboard appeared which then allowed to type a number which would not be in the list synchronized with Explore previously.
it's getting complicated to be able to find your way around, it was simple before...
Thank you to anyone who can help me with these various issues I'm having.
for the problem of making the keyboard appear on "new messages" the Garmin after-sales service that I contacted did not give me an answer, they did not know where the problem came from, apart from resetting the M700, they did not had no other answer...and again no guarantee of result.

  • Too bad they don't always take user feedback into account, the principle of use was simple, the hardware works well, the Mini 2 is better than M1, but over the course of updates, they complicate what originally could  be used easily, too bad...

  • Garmin seems to like it to make it confusing/complicated with apps:

Mini 1 or older iR devices: earthmate

66i etc: Explore app (so far)

Mini 2: Explore app (and/or messenger app)

    Messenger: messenger app

So from a user standpoint with only having a mini 2: it would make sense only to pair the mini 2 with the explore app.

  • I am pretty sure support will tell you that this behavior "is by design". Still, the more people who complain, the better.

  • unfortunately I don't think it's much use, if it's to fix important bugs, they'll fix it (even if it's sometimes a long time later...), but since they've developed several new applications , they won't reset everything and start over from Earthmate, just put everything in Explorer so as not to confuse customers...and above all discourage them from using Inreach, too complicated, some will ignore it and take other solutions, Inreach has many advantages, but as soon as developers put their nose in a working system, it can sometimes turn into a disaster

  • in fact twolpert is the winner:

    from support:

It's not a bug of any sort and is currently by design. We are constantly trying to improve the app and our devices so I am sure that there are more changes to come when it comes to this process.

    Lol!

then I got the text from that instruction how to delete the account from your phone.

If this is by design, then it is very bad design. Apparently nobody does any system analysis today before starting any project.

The instruction on how to delete the account from your phone I read as follows:

If you expect someone to plan to send you a message to your phone number, please ask him on the phone well time ahead. By this you will have enough time to remove the messenger account from your phone just in time to be ready for reception of the SMS message.

Do this with every phone you ever get in your hands, you never know if someone did incidentally use the number for messenger app before.

  • as usual, they are going all out in several directions, but the question remains: how to go back? and above all: how to make it simple, whether to add/remove,
and I am also thinking of users who are not passionate and who do not know all the features of a new device,
how can they think at Garmin to improve the use of a device by making it more complicated, especially since this device can also be used for emergency use.
for my use the Messenger application should not exist, but we cannot do without it to use the Mini 2 correctly with a smartphone, I still have the "simple" use with my Montana 700, but even with this device, you can no longer add a new contact number, you must "also" go through your phone to synchronize your contacts,
at least that's it, we synchronize the new contact with Explore to the M700 and then we can put the phone away, but it's still a bad solution, why make it simple when you can make it complicated at Garmin ???
between Connect, Explore, Messenger, there is enough to be totally lost,
I switched to the Samsung S23 Ultra and I had to start the synchronizations all over again, moreover there is an order to register the devices, Explore did not recognize the M700 while Connect recognized it, Messenger was also a problem, in the part "bluetooth connection", I see my M700 twice, yet it's the same device,
It's already a long way from the time of Earthmate which immediately recognized the devices...

maybe Garmin will manage to do something stable before the arrival of the Samsung S24 which may this time have the possibility of connecting to Iridium satellites, as it had to be done with the S23, if all high-end phones include this function, it will change the world of satellite telephony a lot...especially if the subscriptions are relatively correct in price...

  • Thanks for clarifying this! That's why in my tests (with my inReach Messenger) i could't send sms to my own phone, but emails to myself as well as sms to other peoples phones worked just fine.
