Reconciling routes, tracks and activities

Since I never had the Mini 1, I'm just fumbling my way through here. I've tested the Mini 2 on a run and a hike. Integration and setup with my f6sP and phone apps went great--the controls automatically loaded on my fenix. So I really don't need to touch the Mini much during the activity. So far, my biggest frustration is actually trying to figure out Explorer. I know there's a separate forum for that. But here's my main question:

Why can't Garmin reconcile the tracks from the inReach and the watch when starting the activity set off the process on both devices. The side by side here is from GC (activity) and MapShare (route plus track). Also, it decided to label the new waypoints with a date in December, for some reason.

And here, as you can see, MapShare shows THREE separate tracks from this run. Huh?

  • I suspect that what you may be seeing is stuff which is not  yet synchronized. The "sent points" go to the web site (explore.garmin.com or your MapShare page or whatever) in more or less real time. Since these are relatively far apart in time (10 minutes by default on a lower level plan), they will appear to be connected by long straight lines.

The "logged points" (or the activity, depending on whose terminology you use) are much closer together in time. They are never transmitted by satellite. The will not show up on the web site until you sync. Once you sync, the web site is supposed to (emphasis on supposed) combine the sent and logged tracks into one smooth track. The straight lines should disappear.

In my experience, sometimes that works. And sometimes it doesn't. The web site is a work in progress.

Also note that YMMV. The Explore app, which handles the sync, is also a work in progress. It has been improving, but I haven't tested lately.

None of this has anything to do with Connect, or with the activity on the watch. IMO, they are never going to try to combine the data from the watch and the data from the iR device.

IIRC, the logged points on the iR device DO turn into an activity which does show up in Connect if you sync it there. In general, the Connect and Explore universes do not play well together. I find it best to confine myself to the Explore universe - that's the one that's native to iR devices.

  • @twolpert, they do seem to line up eventually. The 3rd track probably came in from my watch via GC. I made the mistake of syncing everything from GC when I first set up the M2. I wanted to have the routes. But it's unbelievably messy and, of course, they don't come over as routes, so it's useless. Need to wipe everything from explorer.
I notice that new activities do sync pretty fast from GC, such as a ride today where I didn't even bring the Mini.

  • , I use GC daily. Until now I have only used Explorer for the topos. As klugey as GC is, I find vastly more useful than explorer. Even hike planning and route setup for navigation is easier. In Explorer I can't even get the data to filter correctly.
