Menu Order Question and a Couple of Complaints

Ordered my new Mini 2 from REI and just got it today, got a question and also a little disappointed.

Question first - anyone know if you can reorder the main menu options?  When you push OK and the cursor defaults to the "send message" option, which is something I never do with Mini.

I imagine I'm like 95% of old Mini users, I want something I use constantly (the "presets" option to send messages to my wife) to be the DEFAULT option so I can send messages more easily with less manipulation of the buttons when I'm on the move (instead of having to select down to reach it).

Complaints second - Opened the box excited to set up my custom strap mount that I pulled of my old mini...NOPE.  There is no "spine" adapter that was included with the old mini!  Really Garmin...you're going to force me to cough up another $17, and wait for the spine adapter to ship when it was included with the old mini for free?  Ugh!

Also think I got tagged with a $29 activation fee when I set it up online, when all I really did was disconnect my old mini and install the new mini 2?

Seems like a bit of nickle and diming on a $400 unit?  $29 to activate it (when I was just switching units), and another $17 for the mount (that used to be included)?

I'm a long time Garmin user...I just upgraded my Fenix 6x Sapphire to a 7x Sapphire last week, so this seems like adding a bit of insult to injury?

  • I am not aware of any UI customization options. In particular, the order of options is fixed. Unfortunately, the order of the options HAS changed. Send Preset is no longer first in the list. You can submit an enhancement request here:

It does appear that they removed the spine mount adapter. No doubt a marketing decision. Since it involves packaging and all kinds of things, I would not expect this to change.

Contact customer support about the activation fee. You might be able to convince them to remove the charge. Or not.

  • Hello, the user interface does not have customization options and has changed to add both preset and custome message options from the beginning of the menu. You are correct that the spine mount was not included with Mini 2 but as you said can be purchased as an additional accessory at Mini 2 Accessories Page. As for the activation fee this would happen if you deactivated and activated again instead of switching the service which can be done from your account Transferring Existing inReach Service to Another inReach Device. My recommendation would be to Contact Garmin Services Billing and see if there is an option to help with this.

  • Hey twolpert,

Submitted a ticket about the menu order, don't know if they'll do anything about it in future software versions?

Ordered a spine mount, not going to trust that non-locking play carabiner that Garmin includes, and none of my full size lockers fit...so I'm waiting till next week when the spine mount arrives I guess?

I've seen people on the trails using the included carabiner mount and it looks horrible, flopping around as they walk and that would drive me nuts.

Here's my custom Velcro mount I use under the spine mount with a small lanyard back up.  Device is super solid and instantly assessable.

  • I don't remember what it's called, but there is also a mount that is intended to be a belt clip. I have seen people use that to attach the unit to a pack strap. Also needs a lanyard to be sure you don't just scrape the unit off along the way.

You do have the right idea about location. High on your shoulder is about the best you can do. On your belt, in a pants or shirt pocket, or whatever blocks too much sky with your body.
