Internet check in message sent to one of 3 recipients when on satellite only.

I use the standard “everything is OK” check in message with family simultaneously.  Last trip although the kids got their satellite message my wife was only sent an internet message which of course never got to her.  How do I prevent Messenger from sending internet messages which don’t work?

  • no exectly clear what did you sent where

when you have no internet connection, messages will be sent via satellite, going from Iridium server to garmin server and thhis one will attempt to deliver it the way it is possible. If there is a path open to the destination via direct internet, it will take this way. If there is no way to reach the destination direectly it will go via satellite, provided the recipient has a inrech device registered and active and able to communicate.

So how did someone receive the message?

  • Hi  This is something I do for a few days every few weeks and has always worked before.  It worked the following day as well. I sent a free standard "Checking In" message to a group of 4 recipients phone numbers that are set up on my app. 3 recipients got it via satellite and one didn't because the system tried to send it via internet, although there is no internet service of any sort.

FYI the recipient does not need a device.  A text message is sent so they just need to be able to receive text messages from the system.  They can text a reply as well but that of course costs the subscriber.  I did receive a text message from the missed recipient asking if I was OK.  They didn't get my reply that night although we were able to exchange messages a few hours later.  Obviously caused a lot of concern at the time.

  • if you did receive a reply from the recipient, it means the original message did arrive , otherwise this he would not be able to reply. It is only possible to reply to inbound messages.

'internet message' as you call it, do you mean delivered by email? This depends sure also how the recipients are configured in the checkin message list.

Delivery by SMS to a phone, well other story. This may work or may not. Not really Garmin fault. Some providers have problems with forwarding those messages, other do filter them out when the contain some link (e.g. link to map) because they fear this could be some malware attack. Not if this can be also partly set in the phone settings or not.
