wrong position with message

I am experiencing strange issue with messenger. The device mounted on a superstructure of a cargo ship, meaning clear view of sky, gndss and iridium sats.

Tracking in 20min intervals works perfect.

The difference is sometimes many km, sometimes 1km or so. Have other scrn with other examples. The recent SW and the device is brand new.

Anybody experiencing similar?

However when attempting to send a message (using messenger app) the position contained in the message is far away from the actual position. This is reproducable at any given position.

correct position

  • The likely thing here is that the app is taking advantage of cell reception from a nearby shore point. So the message is going that route (rather than by satellite) - AND the position is that of the cell tower (more or less).

This looks like a bug in the way the app determines position. Open a support ticket.

  • well strange

no, definitely no connection via mobile network in this case, phone can not even register to any network in this case

this is brand new messenger device, will copy all the similar picts and pass it to the support

  • Any possibility that the device is connected to the ship's WiFi, and that the SHIP has a land-based connection?  (Even if so, it still seems wrong to report the land position, whatever it is.)

  • not really, there was nothing connected to ships network at all.

    But:

colleagues reported to me similar issue. The remedy should be explicitly forbid the app on the phone to use any position information provided by the phone by what ever means.

I am quite busy currently, so had no time to verify all, but will do it when some time slot av.

If true, this would be kind of bug in the phone app, as we want use the messenger device and its data and not some coarse estimation provided adhoc by the phone.

I will make a report to support anyway, to transmit position with such offset is definitely not OK if in area where gndss works still normally.

look what I found in mapshare!

there are now artefacts. Apparently explore website takes also what comes from the msg and include it in track. This certainly is not wrong, but that the messenger app uses the position of the phone first and then the one from the device is probably not correct.

Mapshare does not account for the msg and shows the correct position
