Erratic message behavior in last few days.

I am seeing some erratic behavior with messages from my old (Delorme) inreach in the last few days (Sept 7-9, 2024).  At one point, messages would not go up, the wheel would just spin for hours.  Now I can send messages, I get the audio tone that says that it went up, but the SMS message does not show up on my phone.   Is this problem unique to me?  It seems like two separate problems, but I can imagine that a system issue could show up in more than one way.   I was wondering if my device was becoming intermittent, but with messages going up but not appearing on my phone, that sounds like a system issue.

  • Open a support ticket. Their first suggestion will probably be a factory reset. You can try that - it will lose all user data on the device, and you will need to repeat the outdoor portion of the activation.

There are lots of moving parts in the SMS path. Device > Iridium bird overhead > Iridium mesh in the air >  Iridium ground station > Garmin servers > SMS gateway > recipient's cell provider network > recipient's cell phone.

If recipient's account has Messenger, M2, or other device which can participate in the Messenger app mess, the number may have been hijacked by MESSenger. In this case, the SMS message will appear in the Messenger app, not in your normal SMS app. Because who would not want that? /rant

The fact that the device behaves oddly suggests a hardware problem. Look at the Inbox at explore.garmin.com for your account. if the message did not make it as far as the Inbox, it's likely a hardware issue. At minimum, it's someplace between the device and the Garmin servers. If it DID make it to the Inbox, the problem is somewhere downstream of the Garmin servers.
