Missing backlight on Inreach messenger

Just got my InReach Messenger yesterday. The setup went well and the device functions as expected, but I can't get any backlight on the device. I noticed this when I brought it outside yesterday evening and tried to look at the display. I've tried to adjust the brightness settings up and down, and also restarted the device several times, but I just can't get it to work. What amuses me a bit is that I thought this had an AMOLED / OLED display, which does not have the traditional LCD backlight, but each pixel is its own light source.

I've updated the device and this is a bit frustrating, as I need it next week and really don't want to send this in and wait for repair / new one. (I live remotely and the mail takes about a week each way).

Anyone experienced this or have any tips?
