Are here any M+ users? Please share your experiences/thoughts!

Is it really such a rare used/bought niche product?

  • I don’t have one, but have you seen this review? Apparently it works a little different internally than the first model.

  • Thanks. WinkYes, already know it. There aren’t many useful reviews available so far.

  • I got 2pc now, started first testing.

Few things are positive, other not so much.

Not all functions clear so far, will have to get into it slowly.

  • In my very limited experience, the business about sending photos via satellite is confusing. And, of course, it IS a MESSenger, so you can never really tell if it's satellite, WiFi, cellular data, or what? It does work, but it's really difficult to figure out what's happening.

  • OK, we wanted ofcourse to test this fancy feature first.

We sent pics, voice msg and long text

DEpends on what the associated phone is able to do at the time.

When the phone has connection to Internet, mobile data or wlan, then it will be transmitted by internet to the garmin server this way.

Now it depends on the recipients capabilities, when he has internet on his phone, he will get it via internet from the server.

Now we also tested, on both sides no internet. No wifi, no mobile data.

Then it takes some time, but the pic will arrive at the recipient too. This time via Iridium on both sides. To save costs in some situation, one can enable or disable if the picts should be downloaded at the recipient side automatically or not.

If disabled, the recipient gets notice that some pic is waiting, but he can decide to download it via Iridium or wait until internet av again.

So no, it is not so extremely complex, just slightly confusing we have more then one unit in our fleeet, so we can test how it is going on just between messenger stations.

  • Do I recall correctly that the recipient requires the Messenger app in order to view the pictures? I also seem to recall something about lower resolution for pictures transmitted via satellite. Full resolution is not available until the recipient has an Internet connection?

  • well, the pic can be supplied by the camera of the phone or taken from where ever on the phone, let say DCIM folder via gallery etc.

it looks like the messenger app will do the extra compression then. We did take a pic by a relative new smartphone and switched internet on both sides off.

Pic did arrive, took some time. It is OK, but when you try to zoom, the high compression is visible.

Pic sent when data connection av arrives also somehow compressed, but much less then the on being transmitted via sat only. Not sure abt this really, but the subjective quality was much more reduced when we had sat connection on both sides.

We transported also a voice mail. This did arrive without any noticable changes.

  • I will collect binary files like pic and will then make it av as soon as I have time for this.

    Other positive things:

having negative attitude to apps and phones, I am happy that now I am able to select multiple recipients when sending message directly from the device.

    Degrees

for those who need all sorts of degrees and geo nets, one can select now really lot of formats for displaying a position

    negative

    delete msg

I am still not able to make some rational cleaning of the message storage on the device. I still have to go one by one, select, delete, really?, confirm that etc.

Hope one day I find some normal way to do it other then reset all account

  • and yes, all the fancy pic and what ever works only with the phone and the messenger app on it.

No need for messenger device to be correct.

The first pic I did receive when my device was not on the air yet. The correspondence partner simply sent it via messenger app to my messenger account. As we had both internet connection, it arrived well.

However this is also the major drawback. The recipient MUST have a phone with the messenger app on it and must have garmin account set up with a phone number.

There is now way to communicate with any other 'normal' old school recipient as email. Apparently grufties using email are not welcome here.

To forward let say a pic, you have to store it on the phone and then you can send it via normal email or so. There seems to be no 'share' function in the messenger app, well sure one can pass it on somehow within garmin network I think.

  • Yes, without a connected phone/messenger app you can't send or receive any pictures or voice messages at all (due to the fact that the M+ doesn't have a built-in camera/microphone/speaker). But even the new Montana 760i (with built-in camera) can´t send pics taken with this camera. I think it will be a long time before iR devices have a camera, microphone and speakers and are able to send pictures and voice messages without needing a phone/app...(if ever).
