Trouble Sending

Sometimes when I pick up the H1 and unlock it, there is a notification that immediately displays that reads “Trouble Sending”. What does this mean? This happens when I’m not even using the H1, sitting on my desk. It has happened with the WiFi and Bluetooth on or off, low power mode messaging.  I feel like the battery drains fast when never I see this pops up.

is “sending” the communication with the gps satellite or something else, can whatever it’s sending be turned off temporarily? I’ve looked through the settings and I haven’t come across anything that could be related to the notification.

  • Hi,

I'm just guessing, because I don't have my H1 at hand right now, so I can't check anything.

It looks like a message related to the Messenger app. I've never tried using it, because as far as I know, support for it, at least up until software version 11.07, was limited to the H1i Plus model (support was later added for the plain H1 in version 12.06, but that was recently pulled by Garmin).

Have you tried using the app recently? What software version do you have?

    Fingers crossed

    P.S.

I think it could be a similar problem to the one reported a couple of years ago for the inReach Mini 2 model:

    https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/inreach/f/inreach-mini-2/384786/trouble-sending-message-notification-days-after-sending-message

  • Thanks for the link! Sounds like the exact same problem I have. Just to clarify I do have a H1i Plus running 11.07. I went through my phone settings and insured the messenger app, explore and connect all have "always" for location services on the iphone. I will try to reset if taking it outside for 30min does not work.

  • Still guessing—I only have a plain H1... :)

If you open Messenger on your device, do you see messages queued up waiting to be sent?

If so, I think what you're saying is a possibility: take the H1i for a walk to see if it can complete the sync, i.e., clear the queue. (Note that, from what I understand, the H1i can send messages via cellular network, not satellite, if Messenger is open on the phone—near the Garmin—and there's signal.)

Otherwise, perhaps it's possible to delete any messages queued up?

    Otherwise, alas, reset…

  • There is nothing in que on my H1i nor my messenger app on my phone. I just deleted all of completed message threads on both just to be sure. I also removed messenger and connect app on my iPad. Let’s see if that solves it first. Next step is turning off the Bluetooth or WiFi. I think I’ll also schedule a SOS test with garmin soon.

  • There is nothing in que on my H1i nor my messenger app on my phone.

So it's probably other satellite transactions, presumably periodic (requests to the gateway to check for incoming messages?), that perhaps fail indoors, the related notifications queue up during standby, and you see them when you unlock the device.

If that's the case, the only thing to try, before resetting, in order to clear all possible satellite transmission queues, seems to be what you suggested earlier: a walk with the H1i for at least half an hour in an open-sky area. If the "Trouble Sending" message disappears, we'd know it was a real queue and not a bug. And this would even be confirmed if, keeping the H1i turned on indoors again, the problem recurred.

Let's hope so Fingers crossed The thread about the Mini 2 has been going on for over a year without producing a solution, if I recall correctly.

  • Hi  I'd recommend checking for any inReach messages that may be stuck. That can be done by opening messages, then selecting Garmin Messenger, then inReach Inbox/Sent. Once you're there, check for any messages marked "sending". Also check for any failed messages or draft messages, or conversations with a warning icon.

If a message is stuck in a queue, that can cause the device to send multiple notifications of a "Trouble Sending" message.

  • Yesterday I deleted all messages in the Garmin Messenger phone app and in the H1i Messenger application. Both are completed empty, nothing in queue. But I still got the message today. I double checked all permissions, privacy and location services on my phone on any Garmin app (Messenger, Conncet, Explore, Drive, and any other maps app like Komoot and Wikiloc) to make ensure nothing was restricting communication between the H1i and the phone.

The last thing to try as was suggested to me earlier is to take a walk with it for 30min on a clear day.

Maybe there is a log file in the H1i that can viewed on the computer to better understand what the "trouble sending" actually is..

Update* I just logged into the Garmin Explore via my web browser on my computer. In the sidebar on the Map tab page there were messages I already deleted from my phone app and H1i. So I manually deleted those, and in the inbox tab page, there were two inreach messages that were old that I deleted on my phone messenger and H1i. So there shouldn't be any messages anywhere, I think I checked all possible locations. Lets see what happens.

  • Hi 3081328, your update is interesting, also because it shows that in Explore the synchronization between the app and the website is not perfect.

And yes, there are log files in the H1i. If they're like the H1, which is almost certainly the case, they're in a "Debug" folder or something like that. There's also a "TLG" folder, which from what I can gather contains the logging of internal metrics about the system's performance.

But I'm going from memory, because I don't have the H1 or my Mac at hand yet. And I've seen where the logs are, but I've never looked at the contents of the files. I'll be able to be more specific tomorrow (maybe sooner).

    P.S.

I saw you updated to 12.08. Who knows, maybe it'll bring something good :)

By the way: do you have a Mac too? If so, you can't look inside the H1i without using specific applications, because the device presents itself to the computer in MTP, a protocol that macOS, unlike Windows, doesn't support natively. In case, I'll be able to tell you more later.

  • Hi, I do have a Mac, so I can do the MTP mode. As of this morning, I have not received any trouble sending notifications.

I did a scheduled SOS test with the H1i today and it worked as expected, I deleted all the messages afterwards in the unit, phone app and in the Explore site on my browser (since the browser did not sync again with device/messenger).

The new firmware is much quicker and smoother. I did notice the battery drains quicker though. In one hour while the H1i was on my desk, the battery drained 4%. That is with all the settings configured for better battery savings such as Low Power for messaging, least map detail, tracking off, all running apps in the phone cleared by swiping up. I did have wifi and BTE on, but I kept that on before and the battery didn't drain as fast. When I looked at the unit storage this morning, the SD card was missing, but I am pretty sure it was recognized before I went to sleep last night. I just popped it out and back in again and it reappeared, but somehow overnight it must have "ejected" on its own.

I will try the MTP mode and check the files later. I also have not taken the unit out for. walk yet or did a reset, those two will be the last steps if everything else fails and I continue to get "trouble sending" messages"

I will post if any updates.

  • 3081328, allow me to kindly correct you on two points, and then I'll shut up forever :)

You have a Mac, so you *can't* "do the MTP mode" without additional applications.

Honestly, I don't understand why you resist the idea of "taking the unit out for a walk." It should be the *first* thing you should try, otherwise there's no way to figure out what's going on.

    Fingers crossed
