Geocaching thoughts (FW7.07)

Found around 120 caches with this unit, hiking and a power-trail-ish. Having used multiple Garmin units to cache with for 20-odd years, I like the refresh of the app and workflow.

Things I noticed:

1. Geocache...with one selected and hit the menu...."update co-ordinates" and if you DO NOT chnage the co-ords, unit will crash and need a long-power reset,

 2. Inconsistent display of geocaching dashboard (or any dashboard?) on the navigation map. If you "page" across to another page, and head back to the navigation screen the dashboard is there again

3. When you navigate to a cache, it adds a waypoint to the map..which will show even if you have waypoint layer off on map layer setup...the auto generated waypoint is painful and covers the actual cache on the map.

4. When  you get close to the cache, a "you are nearby" screen pops up..with a few choices, such as "log" or "continue navigation?". It comes up at the most annoying time, about 40-60 feet away, too early for when you are often need to start looking. Please make it an option (maybe it is).

5. Please add different zoom points for different types of map objects...showing caches only when super zoomed is annoying. A less tight zoom is very often required when choosing areas.

6. In the geocaching app, it looks like the default sort option is "name A-Z".. is there an option to change this? If not, the default should be "by distance".  Distance is way more important than name.

    In most all previous units, this was a very common (and expected) filtering feature allowing for different zoom levels for differing types of map objects. Garmin has now (in their infinite wisdom) removed this pretty much mandatory feature for some reason (known only to them) inhibiting the performance of a "top-tier, flagship" model.

    You may want to send them a suggestion at the link bellow but seeing as this was such a prominent and useful feature in the past, I don't know how this would suggest anything to them as they themselves removed it

    I agree - The GPSMAP H1 and eTrex Touch are both huge steps backwards when compared to previous models.

    I agree with your comments. Obviously the Development team has never spooked  to a User (geocacher), or done any UX test. 

    Now for 20 years I been happy with the Oregons, even though the quality of the software has not been perfect..... but this.... oh no this is like being rolled back in time. i assume this an android platform, so use the UX experience or look at some of the geocaching apps

     

    1 Havent seen this yet because it hard to find the menu for that

    2. The dashboard and menu disappear when you scroll back and forward though the screens, and you need to start over select the cache again. This is so frustrating to navigate with.... 

    Also when you screen goes into timeout and you open up again, the dashboard and menu are gone from the map screen

    3. When you select your geocache the corresponding waypoint get saved on you gps, and get visible on your map . So you dont see then until you select if for navigation. The icon is quite annoying as it is a round blue cirkle that fill up the map..... 

    4. I create my gpx files with GSAK where I get them saved as POI..When you get notified, you have the option to log. Why ? You havent found the cache, and you need to navigate again to get the initial screen with the log option.......why is it not on consisten the hamburger menu ? It goes aways when you page back and forward

    6. I have opened up a case on the sorting problem, Garmin support work on that as we speak. You can use the find at the top instead

    4. I'm actually OK with the option to log on that menu, I just wish you could choose the proximity at which it comes up, or whether it comes up at all.


    I used the unit heavily last weekend, and the most annoying thing was that at times the "log attempt" option was missing from the menus where it normally is. I had to navigate to another cache and then back, and sometimes the option re-appeared. Usually I had to reset the unit for the option to re-appear.

    Oh sorry my english when I write 'You' i dont mean you, but a generic person. I need to phrase it differently

    Also when it disappear, like I described in item 2 in my comments
