Ive loaded the img files in the garmin custom maps file. Nothing shows up on my H1. Ive successfully done this on my montana 710. But cant figure out how on the H1. I transfer them tk the garmins custom maps file via garmin data cable on my pc... but nothing shows up in garmen express. Only the factor map options. Please help.
should i be putting the img files somewhere other tha “custom maps” folder?
thanks alot,
Jeremy
Garmin Express won't show any 3rd party OSM maps you copied to the H1 (whether on internal storage or an SD card), it only recognizes TopoActive maps and any maps purchased from Garmin as download.
Make sure you copied the map's img file to the Garmin folder on internal storage or SD card. What map files did you download?
When using an SD card, in my experience the H1 does not recognize all microSD cards, even though they comply to Garmin's requirements. So if you're able you can try a different SD card. For example with one of my SD cards, the H1 would not recognize the card after a power on, I had to remove and re-insert the SD card with the H1 turned on before the H1 recognized it. A different SD card did work correctly.
Also make sure the SD card is formatted correctly (FAT32 for microSD, microSDHC or exFAT for microSDXC), the official SD Memory Card Formatter for Windows/Mac should do the trick.
When the map files are correctly recognized, the maps should be listed in the Map Manager, and should be selectable in the Map Layers menu in the map app.
Well crap. I forgot about formatting since i wasnt prompted by the device upon insertion. Ill see uf i can format it thus pm and try again.
btw, ive no other issues so far with the unit despite all the horror stories i read. I see a lot of potential. Def a lot smaller/lighter/faster than my montana 710.
thanks alot.

Tried formatting, i THINK it was already fat32, did it anyway and put the osm img files on the card, still not showing up anywhere on the device. Im lost. Wish garmin devices werent so convoluted. Thanks alot for the help! Im liking the device. The same exact sd card in my montana, plugged into my h1 reads the osm maps. Just says "invalid satelite/map file" or somethin upon dtart up. But everything seems to show up fine. Other than that it works. So im confused
thanks,
Jeremy
What map did you copy to the card? And is the map you use on your Montana the same or a different map? The message you get might indicate that the map is only unlocked for the Montana, and not for the GPSMAP H1.
I've used various free OSM based maps with my H1 and they show up fine in the Map Layers menu and in Map Manager.
And, as mentioned, you may want to try a different microSD card, the H1 seems very picky with microSD cards.
Still nothing. Tried a different brand new 64gb san disk micro sd, formatted to exfat(fat 32 wasnt an option) and loaded the img files to it and nothing shows up on the H1.
the maps are from https://garmin.opentopomap.org
eta- im able to dl sat imagery to the sd card in the unit, so its recognizing the card. Just not the files im putting on it.
should be putting the img files somewhere other than “ custom maps”? Seem to recall the montana 710 having a diff option.
thanks alot,
jeremy
You need to put the IMG file in the Garmin folder, not in Garmin\CustomMaps. "Custom maps" are maps created from JPEG images matched to coordinates, and come with a KMZ extension.
This worked BUT only for one of the files. Very odd. Only the ecuador osm would actually copy to the garmin folder. US south and mexico would ACT like they were copying, but the bar that fills to right and the est time never showed up, eventually the window just closed and nothing was in the file. Tried deleting, redownloading and everything, no dice.
On Windows I also sometimes have issues where after copying or deleting files, the H1 kind of becomes stuck and copying (or deleting) files doesn't seem to work anymore. Disconnecting and reconnecting the device to the computer solves that.
So I'd try copying files individually, and not multiple at once. If the device stops responding, reconnect.
Question is though, is the Ecuador OSM map recognized correctly by the H1 and does it show up in Map Layers menu and Map Manager? If so you know that 3rd party maps are working properly...
Thanks alot for your help, sir. Yes the ecuadorian map is functioning as should. I tried unplugging, restarting and such, even deleting and redownloading the files, the copy window opens but the progress bar never appears nor a time frame. After a minute or so the comp makes a beep sound and the window closes. Nothing added to the sd card.
