GPSMAP H1 seems buggy

I got my H1 and I've been using it while out hunting. I've noticed a few problems and inconveniences with it. I was reading the other questions on this forum and it seems like the software is a bit unfinished so I'm hoping they can still fix these!

1. I get in and out of my truck alot while hunting and when I plug it into the trucks USB chargers the H1 goes into I guess USB mode? It shows the USB symbol on the screen and can't do anything else. It doesn't do this when I plug it into a phone charger at my house. Crazy that you can't use the device while charging

2. I set the action button to mark waypoint with single tap, start flashlight with double tap. I can't reliably get the double tap to register. I double tap and it does the single tap action. I've tried pressing it more quickly but it is extremely hard to make the double tap work

3. You can't change the color of tracks on the map I think others have posted the same thing, so this wasn't surprising

4. The compass gets really laggy when you're moving. When standing still its really quick to react to orientation changes but as soon as you start moving it seems to stop working, and when it does work it updates really slow.

  • Typically, the heading information will use the electronic compass when you are not moving. When you move above the threshold speed, it switches to using satellite information. I do not know about the H1. The typical threshold is around 2 miles an hour, which is a slow walking pace.

The likely issue with the truck USB port and charging/data mode: The cable you are using supports data transfer. The phone charger is a dumb brick which has no data mode. So the unit stays online and operational while charging. The truck USB port likely supports data - maybe for things like CarPlay? Anyhow, the unit notices that the other end supports data, so it goes into USB data mode. This would also happen if you plugged it into a PC USB port.

It MIGHT be that the H1 has a setting to block this behavior. The other alternative is to get yourself a cheap "charge only" cable.

Edited to add: I don't see a setting for this in the H1i Plus manual. If the port in the truck is type A, it should be easy to find a charge-only cable. If the port in the truck is type C, it will be more difficult. According to the spec, C-to-C cables must support data. But there are charge-only cables in violation of the standard.

  • For the compass issue, this makes sense based on what I can see. Thanks for the explanation.

For the USB mode issue. I went playing through the device settings and found a setting under the Advanced menu that can change the USB mode. The choices were MTP or Garmin. I switched it to Garmin mode and now it asks if I want to connect when I plug it into the truck rather than going straight into data mode. It would be nice if you could disable it asking altogether because there's no reason I'd ever want to connect data to a vehicle.

There's another useful setting in that advanced menu I found and will post here for the benefit of others: you can change the external power off setting to Stay On so it doesn't give you the 30 second auto power off countdown every time you unplug the device from the charger. I was getting annoyed at that too!
