Transferring maps from 67i to computer

There is a note in the "Manage Maps" of Garmin Express that says maps can be transferred (presumably from the 67i) to a computer for use in Basecamp.  I don't know if this is new.  It would be convenient for planning to work on Basecamp without the 67i attached by USB.  Is the way to transfer the maps documented somewhere?  Does someone know how to do it.  From Windows Explorer the maps appear to be image files with associated files of the same filename but with a different extension.

  • That has always been possible but only (afaik) for City Navigator maps that come with certain navigation devices.

Unfortunately there’s no way to install the TopoActive maps on a GPSMAP 67i to a computer. If you want to use the maps in Basecamp you need to connect the device via USB to a computer.

Or, you could create a virtual Garmin device on your computer and copy map files to that virtual device. Basecamp will see these maps the same way as when using an actual device, but it will be much faster to use. It should also work with TopoActive maps, but I haven’t verified this myself. See https://www.javawa.nl/virtualdevice.html for more info.
