TracBack and audible alarm.

When using TracBack can you have an audible alarm sound if you start to deviate from the path back to your starting point, or do you have to keep watching the screen to make sure you are following the correct path to your starting point? I recall seeing a YouTube video where an audible alarm helped guide you if you deviated from the correct path/track/course. Maybe that was only if you paid the subscription and had InReach tracking at work? As you can tell, I'm still quite confused by this device but am slowly getting there.

I only need InReach for 6 weeks a year while skiing in Japan. I'm yet to work out the most cost effective way of achieving this. I was also surprised to see, after purchasing the 67i, I had to pay yet a further subscription for detailed maps.

  • The course deviation indicator alarm will show if you’re off course navigating to a waypoint but I’m not sure about on trackback. If you’re using the trackback feature, how will you know where you are going if you’re not checking your screen periodically anyway? Subscription is only to send your track points to other people and for messaging other people.

  • If Course Alerts are enabled (see Setting Up an Off-Course Alert on an Outdoor Handheld Device), you will receive an audible alert on the GPSMAP 67i when deviating from the TracBack course. An inReach subscription is not needed to use the TracBack feature.

  • I asked ChatGPT about this and received the following response. I found that I had to wander off course by around 50m - 100m before a warning would sound, even when the Off Course Alarm distance was set to 0.01km (10m). I could see my position on the screen as being off course, but no alarm until I was WAY off course.

To set up course (on/off-course) alerts on your Garmin GPSMAP 67i for use while navigating or using TracBack, follow these key steps:

    1. Enable course alerts in the Marine menu

Although the 67i is primarily an outdoor handheld, its course‑alert settings live under the Marine section:

    1. Press MENU twice to open the main menu.

    2. Scroll to Setup (the gear icon).

    3. Select the Marine icon → Marine Alarm Setup.

    4. Choose Off‑Course Alarm and set the alert distance (minimum is 0.01 miles ≈ 53 ft).

      • That means you'll hear/be shown an alert if you drift ~53 ft off track.

      • Many users suggest this setting when using TracBack to catch deviations promptly Hiking Emergency Beacon+1.

    2. Record your activity to use TracBack

TracBack requires capturing a track; the GPSMAP 67i does this automatically if recordings are enabled:

    1. With the device powered on and GPS locked, press MENU twice.

    2. Select Recording Controls.

      • If it's not already, turn ON Recording to start logging your path.

      • (Recording an activity stores it as a Track—necessary for TracBack in the field) Garmin Support.

    3. Activate TracBack

When you're ready to return along your recorded path using TracBack:

    1. Press MENU twice → Recording Controls.

    2. Use the left/right arrows to go to the Map tab.

    3. Select TracBack → press Enter.

      • The device navigates you back along your precise recorded route (magenta line) GarminGarmin Support.

    4. You can follow the route visually or via the compass page.
