Loading Outdoor Maps+ Best Practice

Is there a less tedious way to load Outdoor Maps+ into a 67i other than the useless map-selection interface on the 67i?  If so, please help me.  Was I wrong about the intended application of Outdoor Maps+?  I thought the downloadable maps could be used on a 67i for a long multi-day hike.  But I haven't found a practical way to download the maps.  It's practically impossible without some ability to match a planned route to the selection map on the 67i without some way to relate the selection map to a tack, waypoint, coordinates or something that would enable the correct map selection.

  • OM+ maps can only be downloaded from the GPSMAP itself. I agree the interface is clunky. It is not clear what regions for which layers are downloaded. Different map layers use different sizes of regions. For example TOPO layer is usually divided in several large regions per country, while buildings layer is for a complete country (in EU, for US it may differ).

So if you download layers based on for example a certain waypoint, it is not clear what TOPO region is downloaded. So it may happen that a different waypoint just falls outside of the downloaded region and you would need to download a different one. Afaik there's no way to see this on the device.

So what I usually do is create a waypoint for the area that I will be visiting, display that waypoint on the Map Page and then select Download Maps Here from the Menu. It requires some preparation, and because map files can be large and the download on the GPSMAP is excruciating slow, it is best done somewhere where you have a reliable wifi and internet connection.

  • Thanks, JungleJim.  That answers the original question.

Follow-up questions: (1) Of menu of layers like FS Topo, Topo, USGS Quads and maybe others, what should you use?  (2) Are maps downloaded to the 67i readable by Basecamp when the 67i is attached?

  • What layers you use depends on what you want to see, I guess? Some layers are meant to be displayed on top of other layers (like the hunting stands layer), and some provide different map views. Descriptions of the available layers can be found at Outdoor Maps Plus Premium Mapping Types.

Some map layers can be viewed in Basecamp, details can be found at Viewing Outdoor Maps Plus Content With BaseCamp.
