What happens when Outdoor Maps subscription expires?

Subscription details for Outdoor Maps+ say:

"Purchased content downloaded during the subscription period is not accessible after the subscription expires."

What exactly does that mean?  Namely, what happens on a 67i when the subscription expires?  Is the annual or monthly renewal date an expiration of the subscription?  Bluntly put, will maps disappear from the 67i in the middle of some wilderness area?  Even if the wilderness had cell service, which it rarely does, I don't take a smartphone when on foot in backcountry?

  • It means that the OM+ map layers you downloaded won't be usable on the device after your subscription has expired.

In the Map Manager you can see the expiration date of your subscription, so I don't think an internet connection is needed for the device to determine that your subscription has expired. If you extend your subscription you will need an internet connection so the GPSMAP can verify a valid subscription and re-active your device.

  • Thanks, JungleJim.  That helps.  I still need to know the effect of automatic renewal. Say, you're on a monthly plan from the 10th of one month through the 9th of the next month and you plan to be nowhere near the Internet during that time and dependent on your Outdoor Maps+ downloads for navigation?

  • That’s a good question, I don’t know the answer to that. Maybe  can provide info on this.

  • Here's a partial answer to my question: When you've passed the renewal peirod, the 67i will provide a warning window saying that you license to use the downloaded maps has expired.  It will ask if you want to delete the maps.  You have the option to decline the deletion.  So the maps remain on the device.  I don't know of any functionality that disappears.

  • If the subscription period has expired and the maps are still on the device, the corresponding layers will not be available to use. You can check the subscription status from the device (needs a paired phone and internet) and if it sees a valid subscription you can use the layers again.

So that would essentially mean you need to plan ahead if you will be using Outdoor Maps+ across two different billing cycles because you would need to check the subscription status.
