As Inreach 67i already has preloaded Australia/NZ maps, what benefit would I get from purchasing the extra Australia/NZ download?

Hi, I live in Australia and have a garmin inreach 67i which comes loaded with topo maps. My current travel is just in NZ and Oz - do a lot of hiking and venturing into bike packing now. Why would I buy the extra Australia NZ Topo maps or would I just be buying something I already have?

  • Not sure what maps are available for New Zealand and Australia. It sounds like you would just be buying the same maps again. I’m in Canada and I think those maps you are talking about are maps I would buy if I was coming to your area. You could call Garmin to check but I suspect I am correct. I can buy topo North America too, but my Garmin already has it installed. There may also be extra maps with different names available to download, that may be of a different scale and have more detail. There are quite a few for U.S. regions, but I’m not sure about Australia/N.Z. Check what’s available online at Garmin, if the scale is the same as yours it’s most likely the same.

  • Depends. The preloaded Topo maps are based on osm maps. I don’t know the available other Garmin Topo maps for Aus/NZ, but they may have more details/better dem data etc, if they are not osm based. Perhaps someone from Aus/NZ with these maps can answer this better.

  • The TOPO Australia and New Zealand maps are different from the TopoActive maps that come with your GPSMAP 67i. So if you buy them you would be buying different maps.

Whether it's worth it to buy them I cannot answer to be honest, as I haven't used those maps.

Or you could look at something like TalkyToaster maps. Those are OpenStreetMap based maps provided by a 3rd party for a small fee. I think they work great. There maybe other 3rd party providers that provide (free) OSM-based maps as well.

  • As has been stated, TopoActive maps are based on OpenStreet Map which is a user-generated map database. In other words, in places that people visit more, the mapping is likely to be more detailed; while, in more remote areas, the mapping may be less detailed. Other Garmin TOPO maps are not based on user-generated databases and will typically have a consistent level of detail in all covered areas.
