I cant get GPS 67i to send a text

My GPS 67i InReach is activated, the account is current. I cant seem to get a text message to my iPhone. I want to be able to see the inreach number so other people can be provided with the handsets number and text from outside the organisation and not using the gramin messenger app with a Bluetooth connected handhold unit. It seem silly to me that you have to have one unit paired to a phone, I have ten units and the old Inreach Explorer, whilst clunky was a lot easier!

  • There is no phone number, a person can only contact you once you contact them for the first time. Once you message them they should be able to respond back to you like a normal text message if they use the link you sent them. They don’t need the Mess app. Every thing like your contacts and device needs to be setup in the Garmin Explore website not the explore app.Things are still clunky, that’s the Garmin way. As far as inreach devices talking to each other I think the operation is still as it was for multiple devices.

  • Garmin Explore app allows you to set your contacts etc as well. So no need to use Explore web only.

  • As Snow_Leopard says, there is no "inreach number". People can only reply to a text message you send them via inReach. The phone number the message comes from can change, and cannot be used to initiate a converation. Sending a Message to an inReach Device explains how other people can initiate a conversation to your inReach device.

You do not need the Messenger app. If you do not have it installed, you can send messages from the Explore app (when connected to your GPSMAP 67i), or from the GPSMAP 67i itself (without the need for a connected smartphone). The advantage of the Messenger app is that it can send/receive messages via internet if cellular or Wi-Fi is available, so this can reduce costs because messages don't need to go via the satellite network.

If you did install the Messenger app and want to remove it, make sure to follow Deleting the Garmin Messenger Account and App to make sure your mobile phone number is disconnected from the app. Not doing this can result in messaging issues.

  • There is a finite lifetime to the ability to reply that way. Nobody knows for sure what it is, but it's on the order of a few weeks. Most of us "prime the pump" by sending a new SMS to our contacts before each outing. That way, everybody has a number to which they can reply for that outing and a few weeks after.

  • Thank you JungleJim and Snow_Leopard, this makes sense. I am sending units to Papua Ne Guinea soon and I am in Australia so  if I am correct I need to ask the carriers to send a message to me once they are in country and this  should allow me to reciporacate and also then be able initiate messaging from the office?

  • Not sure what you mean by initiate messaging from the office? You can certainly reply to the SMS messages you receive.
