setting GPSMap 67i file types

I bought this particular Garmin GPS firstly for its GPS capabilities (waypoints, tracks, navigation) but secondly, also its inReach communication accessibility for emergencies when remote bushwalking or more regularly when working alone in bushland as a field ecologist. I have no idea why Garmin has set the default file type as "FIT" that has a narrow function and is in my opinion a non-essential function.  I did change the setting to to "FIT and GPX" but on then collecting work necessary waypoints/tracks when reviewed on computer it is only "FIT" files that are there and are useless for my purpose. If anyone can advise to how to access GPX files from the 67i please do. 

To Garmin please update so there is GPX file only to select in addition to the other file formats for those that use them. Please also provide on your webpage the means to convert files from one type to another and not through third party provider.

    With your 67i set to generate a GPX file as well as a FIT file when you save your track, the GPX file is written to the device \Garmin\GPX folder and this folder can be accessed from your computer to retrieve them. The GPX files of any Waypoints are also written here.

    Your GPX tracks can be viewed on the device in Saved Tracks, and saved Waypoints in Waypoint Manager.

    Alternatively you can use BaseCamp.

    NB BaseCamp cannot delete FIT files and will continue to read any FIT files on the device until these are deleted. These can be simply deleted from the device \Garmin\Activities folder or delete them on the device one by one in Recorded Activities.

    What data are you searching for exactly?

    By default Garmin will store recorded activities in FIT file format. You can configure the device to store recorded activities in GPX format as well (see Menu > Setup > Recording > Advanced Setup > Output Format). The GPX files for recorded activities are stored in the Garmin\GPX folder on the internal storage.

    Personally I find FIT files much better than GPX for recorded activities: they are smaller, allow for more data to be stored like sensors or custom data from Connect IQ apps, and they can easily be processed by different tools and platforms. FIT is kind of the default file type for activities (and courses) in the Garmin world, as it is used on most Garmin cycling computers, outdoor handhelds and smart watches.

    If you mark a location and save it as a waypoint, the waypoint is stored in a GPX file in the Garmin\GPX folder on the internal storage of the device.

    If you want to navigate a track or route, the GPSMAP 67i supports navigation GPX track and GPX routes. But it also supports Courses that come in FIT files. The navigation experience is a bit different for each, so take whatever suits your needs.

    Might be helpful to post links to your favorite .fit tools. It's been a while since I bothered to look. At the time, there was not much out there. Certainly much, much less than for .gpx. Everybody reads .gpx. .fit, not so much. At least not at the time. (I am talking about outside the Garmin walled garden.)
