It’s probably coming soon as Garmin has given up fixing the bugs on the current one. Yes it’s time for a new bug infested unit. Let’s start this game again.
Garmin usually doesn’t announce new products, it just releases them (with a few exceptions). So if there’s a successor to the GPSMAP 67 it will probably be a press release and a new product on the Garmin website. And someone from the community will probably post about it here.
Also, I’m curious in what Garmin will do with the GPSMAP product range. They seem to focus fully on the other product ranges (smart watches, cycling computers) and there doesn’t seem to be a large market nowadays for dedicated outdoor handheld devices.
If you take a look at the Montana series for example, the 700 was released 5 years ago, and was updated very marginally this year, mainly to make it compliant with EU USB-C regulations. But who knows what the future may hold.
Thank you for your feedback. Yes, from what I've read, these handheld devices seem to be almost obsolete in this age of smartwatches.
The Montana series, however, isn't an option for me. The device is much too big for on-the-go use.
At least Garmin could fix the bugs, people pay a lot of money for these devices. Personally I would never buy a Garmin watch just because of their attitude toward fixing handheld unit bugs. Even more money for a watch that might always be buggy, plus perhaps I just can’t see myself looking at a microscopic map on my wrist. As an outdoorsman since the early 1970s I still go with paper maps and a real compass. Not a $2k watch with bugs!
I went for the 67i because of size and I didn't want a touch screen (gloves). I'm still using it for intended purpose, but later this summer I'll probably sell it.
PSA: You want the map and compass backup anyhow. Stuff happens - batteries go dead, you smash the device, or whatever.
