GPSMAPS 67i battery depletes in less than a day

Hello all.

I recently bought a Garmin GPSMAPS 67i and still learning how to use it.

I got a subscription as well, and that seems to work fine.

However, if i turn the unit on and just leave it alone, without doing anything, the battery dies in about 12-15 hours.

Many people report online that their battery lasts at least 2-3 days.

I have wifi and Bluetooth turned off, tracking off, display turns off automatically after 2 min, auto track is off, all the fitness and health sensors are off, expedition mode is set to "Never".

Is this normal ?

Any input appreciated.

  • Outdoors or indoors??

If outdoors with a clear view of the sky, this is probably abnormal. Open a support ticket.

If indoors, this is to be expected. Like all inReach devices, the 67i is a safety device. Once an hour, it will attempt to contact the Iridium constellation to check for messages. Unless the 67i is different from every other inReach device, you cannot disable this check. Once the device initiates this (or any other pro-active) request, it tries VERY hard to complete it. It will continue to try forever. Completion is usually impossible indoors. The net result is that the Iridium modem will remain "on" a very large percentage of the time. This is a huge battery suck.

  • Understood.

    Yes, this happens indoors.

I will monitor when outside then.

    Thank you for your reply/

  • Our unit went a week in Alberta without charging.

Consider doing a factory reset just in case you changed a setting inadvertently.

If it's new, there are probably some firmware updates.  Garmin Express probably took care of that already.  If it hasn't, get the updates.

  • inReach handhelds are designed to be used outdoors. We suggest testing the device before you head out on your trip, but do so outside. If the device is powered on indoors, the battery will drain noticeably faster as the handheld will not be able to find the signal for sending/receiving messages or tracking points. Additionally, the handheld will have to try a lot harder to find a GPS signal. For more information, see Improving the Battery Life of Garmin inReach Products.

  • Thank you Dave. You are right, and thank you for the link, very helpful.

I talked to a Garmin rep and he confirmed that indoors battery will deplete a lot faster.

I tried to update firmware but it tells me that it is up to date.

WIll keep an eye on this.

    Thank you all for responding.
