Garmin 67i "turn by turn" doesn't work

I'll be traveling in the USA next month. For this trip, I have purchased the following maps:
- City Navigator North America NT and
- TopoActive North America

However, I'm having serious navigation problems with my Garmin 67i. I have purchased the City Navigator® Europe NTU maps. Although the routing is selected on automotive, the device gives me erratic indications.

- For example, it makes me take detours along roads that are forbidden to traffic, when the correct route is straight ahead on the main road
- turn by turn doesn't work. In the roundabout, the trajectory tells me that I should continue straight ahead, but the turn by turn indication tells me that I should turn left with an arrow as if it were a crossroads and not a roundabout.
- After passing the roundabout, the turn-by-turn sign remains stuck on the previous erroneous sign.

Because of this lack of reliability, I decided to buy another Garmin device more suited to road navigation. I bought a Garmin DRIVESMARTTm 76 thinking it would give me peace of mind for my future trip to the USA. Unfortunately, I realize that the City Navigator North America NT and TopoActive North America maps I just bought are not transferable to my new GPS.  I now find myself with USA maps on a GPS whose navigation does not work and a new GPS that works but without the USA maps I just purchased.

I have spent a significant amount of money only to end up having to use free apps on my mobile phone for my trip to the USA. I hope that Garmin can provide a solution so that I can have a professional and reliable navigation system for this trip.

Kind Regards,

nick

  • One question, why did you buy TopoActive North America? The GPSMAP 67i comes with (almost) world wide TopoActive coverage. So you can install other regions than the default installed region using Garmin Express (preferred option) or via the Map Manager on the device itself (which is very flaky and unreliable).

Also maps purchased from Garmin are indeed locked to the device you bought them for, so it is not possible to transfer the maps to a different device.

As for the navigation issues, check what maps and map layers you have active. Make sure only City Navigator is active, and no other routable layer. Having multiple routable layers active can mess up the routing.

Also check the routing setting for how avoidance settings are configured, those may influence the calculation as well. See Main Menu > Setup > Routing > Advanced Setup > Avoidance Setup.

That being said, my experience with using a GPSMAP 67 for car navigation is that the unit is not suitable for that purpose imo. Route calculation is way too slow, the screen is too small, and dedicated car navigation devices provide much better functionality.

  • Thank you Jim for your reply.

I did have several maps activated. Navigation is now more consistent, but it's true that long-distance route calculation is more reliable on the DriveSmaart. I will consider buying the US maps for this device as well. Too bad Garmin doesn't allow you to deactivate the map on one device and transfer it to another, as is the case with a lot of software.
