Device with software 8.90 shows 8.80 in about screen?

This was mentioned by another GPSMAP 67 series user on the gpsrchive forums (not sure if he is active here). But after updating to device software version 8.90, the Setup > About screen shows both version 8.80 and 8.90. The first line on the screen reads Software Version 8.90, and the line Host Software Version reads 8.80 (can't post screenshots anymore otherwise I would have added one).

Garmin Express detects software version 8.80 and does not offer an update to 8.90. The GarminDevice.xml file on the unit also lists software version 8.80.

Guess something went wrong with releasing the 8.90 update? Does that mean the issue fixed in 8.90 is not actually fixed?

  • I can't tell from the post. DID you attempt to update to 8.90 with Express originally? (If the device is 8.90, it was offered at some point. Or you got it OTA.) if so, did you power-cycle the device after Express reported a successful update? The reason I ask is that Express has a bad habit of saying the device is up to date even though the ONLY thing that has been done is to deliver the update file to the device. You have to unplug and reboot in order to actually INSTALL it.

I don't own a 67i. But I have never seen the "Host Software Version" on the about screen on any device, including the (very similar) 66i.

  • The host software version is 8.9 on my 67i.  Sounds like a problem with the install on your device.

I wonder if there is a way to reinstall the update?  I know there is a key sequence on a fenix that allows a user to reinstall.  Maybe a call to tech support will get you running as it should.

  • You ought to be able to put the appropriate GUPDATE file on the device using Windows Explorer. Then disconnect and reboot. I am not entirely certain that the device will process it if the version is lower than or matches what the device thinks it has.

More detailed instructions here on gpsrchive: https://www.gpsrchive.com/GPSMAP/GPSMAP%2067/Firmware.html

NOTE WELL: Be sure you have the correct f/w for your device. The above is for the 67, not the 67i.

This is an unsupported operation. You ARE better off opening a support ticket.

  • The GPSMAP 67 also allows for a forced reinstall of the software, it's available via a diagnostics menu accessible from the Trip Computer screen. Tried that, didn't solve the issue...

  • I installed the 8.90 update via Garmin Express on the day it was releases. The GPSMAP 67 went through the normal procedure for an update. Did multiple power cycles of the unit. I have my GPSMAP since launch so I'm quite familiar with the update process Slight smile

Also copied the GUPDATE.GSP file to the Garmin folder of internal storage (I usually make a copy of the update file before updating the device), but the GPSMAP doesn't detect is a new update.

When connecting the GPSMAP to a computer, it says 8.80 installed but doesn't offer an update. Tried it on my macbook pro and my Windows desktop, same results.

In this screenshot you can see the Host Software Version, its displayed under the unit id (which I have removed from the image).

  • Garmin Support provided a procedure (thanks!) to force a reinstall of the 8.90 software update: connect the unit to a computer and put the 8.90 GUPDATE.GSP update file in the Garmin folder of the internal storage, and also put an empty file called force.tmp in the same directory. Unplug the GPSMAP and power it on. The device will show a message that new software is available and asks to install it. Selecting Yes will install the update. My unit now correctly shows 8.90 in the About screen.
