67i turning on by itself

Twice now I went to use my 67i and found it dead, about two weeks after I last used it and fully charged it. I normally store it in the Garmin soft case. So I started to wonder, did I turn it off, how long should a charge last with the device off? So yesterday I was playing with it for a bit and three times  I noticed that when I turned it off, it powered back on about 10 seconds later. It was not in the case. It’s not something I can currently duplicate though it seems random. Has anyone else had this happen? V8.80 software, and I’m not sure if it did this previous to V8.80. There was a post about 3 years ago on a 66i doing this, but no posted cause or resolution.

  • I have had this. In my case, it appears to be linked to my heart rate monitor which I have connected to my 67i by Ant+ or Bluetooth. Disconnect the HRM and it shuts down without rebooting. I say "appears" because I only recently discovered the "fix" and am still testing it, but seems to work. If you have nothing else connected then I don't know what is causing your issue.

  • Are you sure it’s off, and not in expedition mode?

  • No it’s not in expedition mode, I’ve discovered that it occurs sometimes when if I turn it on, then turn it off shortly after the first screen shows, which is my map screen. I’ll have to  watch it to make sure it doesn’t just randomly power on at other times though. It’s not something I duplicate every time I test it though. Now you might ask why would I do that anyway, and all I can say is I don’t normally, but I guess I did a couple of times and didn’t notice it powering back on. I’ve actually seen this happen quite a few times, but as I said I can’t always duplicate it. Then when the screen was off I put it away, only to find it dead a few days later. So now I know to double check it every time I put it in my case, because it could have powered back on. Maybe I shut it off before it finished its boot up process, I don’t know. But now I kind of don’t trust it.

  • Same thing happening here with my Gpsmap 67i.

  • Please make sure that the firmware on your GPSMAP 67i is up to date: Updating the Software on Your GPSMAP 67i. If the issue is occurring with updated firmware, please reset your GPSMAP 67i: How to Reset the GPSMAP 67/67i Handheld Devices. If the issue persists after resetting the device, please contact Product Support directly for assistance with your device.

  • Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it!

I will do so this evening!

  • Bought a brand new Garmin 67i, been playing around with it for a week or two and have experienced this random shut off twice now.

First time was after rebooting it twice in a row by holding power down. It wouldnt turn on for a good 24 hours after this. Just black screen. Couldn't even charge it or anything. But it eventually did turn back on after continuously trying for almost an entire day. But then it randomly turned off again while I was using the map a day or two later.

2 random turn offs, with it unable to turn on for a good 24 hours the first time. I reached out to support and will be exchanging for a new one, but I have my concerns that it could be an issue with the model itself.. Fingers crossed the replacement doesn't have the same issues!!

  • Today I received a query from a very experienced GPS customer (since 2004) regarding his New Zealand new, Sept. '23 GPSMAP 67 doing the same as above mentioned faults:

"... the purpose of this email is to report some buggy behavior. I am not sure if this is normal. I have sometimes found that sometimes it reboots itself. Often this is when I use a lot of key presses one after the other, the GPS will shutdown and restart itself. Anyway, it wasn't a big deal and I assumed that limited memory must have got overloaded and it would restart and always come back to the same place.

However, since the last software update, this has manifested itself in another annoying form. When I turn the GPS off, sometimes it shuts down immediately and then restarts itself. I have to watch it and check that the symbol appears for a reasonable time and then check, by pushing a button, to check that it is really off and it hasn't turned itself back on and is just in screen saver mode. More than once I have picked up the GPS and found it has been on for the last day or two, and a half flat battery."

I'll send him the link to this topic - as it has the latest update he can try a master reset.  Next stop will be to phone Garmin in Sydney for advice.

  • I've had the same issue reoccur on the latest software after performing a hard reset like Garmin-Chris suggested above.

Also it seems like the device likes to turn on randomly in my bag.

  • Got a brand new 67i replacement from Garmin and so far have had one random freeze + restart in the first week with it. Was using the map with a route set and satellite may have lost reception for a second and caused it to crash? Totally frozen for a good 5-10minutes without being able to restart it (tried holding power button down for upwards of 60 seconds). Was kinda embarrassing, as I was showing it off to a friend. And I'm sure he was thinking to himself "yep, this thing is definitely junk."
