Question about Current Activity

Hello,

If I imported the Current Activity from my Dakota 20 it would be several tracks in Mapsource and it would show every individual activity (depending on how many times the GPS had been turned off and on).
When I import from my GPSMAP 67i it is 1 track and 1 big current activity despite the fact that my GPS was turned off between activities. So every activity is connected to eachother, which results in a very long track and a chaotic screen:

On my Dakota it starts recording automatically and stops when I turn of the GPS. It only archives when full.
On my GPSMAP it starts recording automatically and stops when I turn off the GPS. It only saves when full.

Is there another setting which I should use to make it work like my Dakota 20?

  • You might want to take a look at the Auto Save setting (under Menu > Setup > Recording > Advanced Setup). There are a couple of different ways the unit will save the current activity and start recording a new one. Also Archiving a Track and Marking a Track as a Favorite and Archived Track and Auto Save Information and related articles may provide more info.

Personally I don't use the auto save feature, so not sure if you can replicate the behavior you are used to from your Dakota 20. Alternatively you can manually control the start and stop of activity recording by Auto Start to Off and using the recording controls.

  • I think we are conflating RECORDING and IMPORT. AFAIK, the recording settings on the 67i have no bearing on the result of an import.

How did you do the import? In particular, did you import a .fit file or a .gpx file? Directly dropped onto the 67i, mediated by PC software (Mapsource, BaseCamp, whatever)? Mediated by a mobile app like Explore?  Something else?

  • Hello, sorry for the late reply. I record on both .FIT and .GPX format.

With my Dakota 20, I would open Mapsource, select 'receive from device' and select 'Tracks'.
Then it would show all the recorded activities as seperate tracks (so not connected to eachother).
If open Basecamp and click on 'Internal Storage', it would also show all the seperate recorded activities on the map.

If I connect my GPSMAP, it will not show up in Mapsource.
But it will in Basecamp. When I click on 'Internal Storage' it will show everything (routes, waypoints and tracks. It will also show all the recorded activities BUT connected to eachother, so one massive chaotic track...
When I click on 'Device > Receive from device' it will again receive all the recorded activities but as one big chaotic track.

But when I look at the map on my GPSMAP it will not show this. It shows all the recorded activities as seperate, not the way it is shown in Basecamp.
    Why is this?

  • Mapsource will not work with the GPSMAP 67, the software is simply too old.

What do you see for the list of activities in Basecamp when you have the GPSMAP connected? Or better yet, what files are listed in the Garmin\Activities folder on the internal storage? If there is only one or a few FIT files, then you need to check your Auto Save setting.

As for the straight lines in the recorded activities, check the support article My Outdoor Handheld Has a Straight Track Line and Automatically Starts Recording.

  • There are 4 FIT files.
When I open it in Basecamp it is shows all the recorded tracks as one large track (even though the GPS has been turned off and on between all the activities.

I just don't understand why on my GPSMAP it shows everything as seperated recordings, while in Basecamp it is one large connected track.

I wish it would just be like my Dakota 20 so I can see all the things I have done in a year.
But I guess I will just have to save every recording after I am done...

  • Are you sure you are looking at the correct data? If you have the GPMAP configured to save both GPX and FIT then Basecamp will show both. Take a look at the individual files to see if they contain the data that you expect.

Also take a look at the Auto Save setting (under Menu > Setup > Recording > Advanced Setup).

Basecamp shows the data as it is on the device, so there must be something that can explain what you are seeing.
