No warnings when navigating a saved track on the 67i as found on the 60csx.

gps60csx and gps67i

I couldn't figure out the image upload. Maybe it is not linux compatible. Hence the imgur.

On the GPS60 you can record a track, save it, and then track it back later. The GPS alerts upcoming turns. (see link)

On the GPS67i, track is kind of a sacred thing since it means using the satellite. So you record an activity, but then you can turn the recorded activity into a track. However there is no guidance when navigating the saved track. I have set it up as best as I could. That is I found the Left/Right error field and the pointer. I found the off-course in the Marine settings and set it to 0.01 mile which should be 52ft. I found I needed 150ft until the off course warning. But what I really miss are the warnings of upcoming turns.

Please tell me this is pilot error and there is something i need to set to make my 67i as good as a 20 year old 60csx.

  • When navigating a track on the GPSMAP 67i, you do not get turn-by-turn instructions. It's just a breadcrumb trail you're following with alerts when you're off the track.

To get turn-by-turn directions, you must either follow a Route or a Course using Roads&Trails Course Navigation (see Main Menu > Setup > Routing > Course Navigation). For the differences between Track, Route and Course see What are Tracks, Routes, Waypoints, Activities, and Courses on Garmin Outdoor Handhelds?.

As for terminology, with inReach devices (which the GPSMAP 67i is), Tracking means periodically sending your current location via the Iridium satellite network so others can see where you are. This differs from Activity Recording, where the device will store a much more detailed log of your locations locally on the device. This Activity Recording is basically the same as a saved track on the GPS60, but the file format is different (FIT vs GPX). A recorded activity can then be synced with the Garmin Connect app or Garmin Explore app.

On the device you can convert between tracks, routes and courses (not all combinations are possible). This can be done by opening up the Course Planner/Route Planner/Saved Tracks/Recorded Activities tools, opening a Course/Route/Track/Activity and pressing Menu.

  • In addition to the information provided by JungleJim, please also note that you can reverse an activity on the GPSMAP 67i and use it for navigation. To reverse the activity:

    1. Press MENU twice to open the main menu.
    2. Select Recorded Activities.
    3. Select an activity.
    4. Press MENU.
    5. Select Copy Reversed.

Then to navigate the reversed activity:

    1. Press MENU twice to open the main menu.
    2. Select Recorded Activities.
    3. Select an activity.
    4. Select the map tab.
    5. Select Go.
  • I found that Basecamp can convert a track to a route. I have to say the navigation is only slightly better. Now I get a "dig" at a fix in the route. However I am not getting a warning that a turn is coming. The guidance is pretty much useless in a car. I it barely useful on foot.

I'm looking for something as good as my 20 year old GPS60CSX. That GPS warned me when approaching a turn.

I'm willing to hack some more if anyone has suggestions. This is such a disappointment. .
