Compass not pointing in direction of track/course but back to starting point.

Tested this on a course I created as well as a track and got the same results.  I think it is a setup issue or perhaps an incorrect assumption of functionality.  What I mean is that I have a track that is a loop with the start and end in the same location.   This image shows the path with the red star showing the start/end position and the red arrow being the direction of travel.

When I start down the path the compass immediately points back to the start/end position and not on the trail.  Maybe I don't understand the tool but I hoped that I could use the compass to point in the direction of the track as I moved along it.  So when it came time to make a turn to the left in the image above the compass would point in the direction of the path I should follow.  Instead it stays focused on the start/end point.  It also immediately tells me I am off course because I am not going in the direction of the compass.  Perhaps I am just supposed to use the Map view and keep an eye on the arrow alignment to the track.  But that doesn't explain the 'Off Course' notification. Sooooo what am I doing wrong? Grimacing  thanks in advance.

  • From the owner's manual:

    Compass

When navigating, points to your destination, regardless of the direction you are moving.

  • thanks for the response.  So whenever I am in a loop track that has the same start and end point it will always tell me I am "off Course" since I am going away from the destination?

  • No, I don't think it should work like that. I have a 66i, not a 67i and when I first used Courses, the software would invert the course, such that my starting point and end point were switched. It would tell me I'm off course because I was leaving my end point (actually the starting point).

That problem went away, though I'm not sure why. I just tested a Course similar in shape to yours and I didn't get an "off course" notification.

If you have a straight line course or track, check to see if the start and end points got inverted, or create a new straight course to see.

You can also get an off course notification due to GPS inaccuracies. Ensure you wait long enough to see if you get an on course notification after a few minutes.

You could also try doing a device reset (within the Setup Menu), but that may cause you to lose data depending on which reset you choose.

  • thanks.  I will give that a try.
