Device crashes when plugged into phone

I have a new unit that has been updated. When I plug the unit into the phone the 67i has a dialog that it generated a GPX file.  Then the screen shows a USB symbol yet it will not connect to Garmin Explore on the phone. If I unplug the phone it eventually goes off and I can repower with the on/off switch

When I have advanced recording to generate FIT and GPS and hook it to the phone the screen shows the dialog for generating GPS and then locks up.  No button will cause an action.  The on/off switch does nothing. Screen is on and eventually goes to the USB icon.  After several minutes the device reboots.  Then it is a brick with a black screen and the LED next to the power button is blinking green for several minutes.

Then I get a beep and can power on the device. 

The unit will connect and synch wirelessly to Explorer.

When I connect the unit to the computer and Explorer I get a dialog that says the 67i is not compatible with Explorer then it sets up a download for GarminUpdater. That won't work either.

Something has a glitch.

    I wasn’t aware you could plug the 67i into a phone or tablet. You can plug it into a computer. Just wondering why you are trying to plug it in to view the Explore app, when it all works with Bluetooth. All the Garmin apps work with Bluetooth. Do you have Garmin Express installed on your computer?

    The instructions indicate you can plug into a computer or phone for updates.

    I have never heard of plugging into a phone for updates. Paired to a phone yes. The device will automatically update when turned on if it has a wifi account entered into it or it can be updated through  a paired phone on a cellular network using the explore app. Looking in the online manual I see nothing about actually plugging into a phone, only a computer. The manual says to install Garmin express on a computer to update it and/or to install the Garmin apps on your phone. The explore and messager are probably the two you’d want. Plus the Garmin explore website on a paired phone. It doesn’t say you can plug your phone into your device with a cable.
