Safely Remove Hardware icon not showing for GPSMAP 67 on Windows 11

Hi, I have a GPSMAP 67 and connect it to a Windows 11 pc. The windows control that normally shows in the task bar to 'safely remove hardware' is not showing. I've tried a number of ideas on the internet but none have worked. The only option I have is eithe to pull the device cable out with it still connected or to shutdown the pc. Any ideas please?

  • Setup > System > Interface. This controls what happens when you connect the device via USB. I don't have a 67i. But I think you will find that the "mass storage" mode is MTP, not USB. Unlike USB, MTP never requires an "orderly dismount".

[IIRC, it has been some time since orderly dismount was required by default even for USB "disks". This had to do with whether or not Windows buffered writes to the USB "disk". If Windows is buffering, orderly dismount makes sure all changes are written to the "disk". For a long time now, the default has been "do not buffer". With no buffering, the device is always up to date. So no real need to dismount.]

Note that rebooting the PC is no different from just yanking the USB cable.

  • Ah, ok great thanks. The device only offers MTP mode or Garmin mode. If you select Garmin mode and plug in a USB cable then it asks if you'd like to switch to MTP mode. So it looks like you're saying there's no need for an orderly removal under MTP and I'm fine to just pull the cable. What is Garmin mode for?

  • The GPSMAP 67 can be unplugged anytime. It is not needed (nor possible) to use “safely remove hardware”.

This is because the 67 only supports MTP mode when connecting to a PC, instead of the Mass Storage Mode of earlier devices. With MTP a disconnect will always be safe without risk of losing or corrupting data.

  • Garmin modes (spanner and serial) are for using the GPS to provide info to an application running on the PC. I believe the same is true of NMEA output. Some of these modes (Garmin Serial for sure) will require a virtual "USB to serial" converter. This allows the USB device to appear as if it was a serial device...
