Automatic check-in messages

Can you set a GPS67i to send check-in messages at automatic intervals?

  • I do not have a 67i. However, this functionality is not present on any OTHER iR device. So I doubt that it is present on the 67i.

I understand that track points are chargeable on some plans (as opposed to check-in messages, which are free). But this IS what sent track points are for.

  • Thanks for the info.  Thinking about it more, I guess it makes sense as a safety feature to not have your unit continue to send in automatic updates, in case you are incapacitated.  Track points at least indicate you are moving.

  • Perhaps only send them if you are moving? But I don’t think we will see this for the free check-in messages…

  • Hello inReach messages do no have the option to send messages automcatically. You would have to initiate them.

  • There are browser add-ins that will monitor a specific web page or portion of a web page and notify you by email when the web page changes as would happen when mapshare receives a new track point.  As for the comment about not sending track points if you are incapacitated.  Track points would continue to be sent if you are incapacitated, which will help your next-of-kin find your body if you tumble down a long slope far from the last track point position.

  • Once you initiate tracking, track points are sent as scheduled as long as the unit is powered on and has a reasonably clear sky view. The send interval DOES increase to once every 4 hours if you are not moving. the scheduled interval resumes once you start moving again.

From a SAR standpoint, tracking provides an up-to-date "last known position" as a starting point for any search. This is available even if you are incapacitated to the point where you cannot send an SOS. Of course, if you cannot send an SOS, somebody at home has to report your absence.

This is more reliable than occasionally sending a manual check-in message.
