Weak GPS notice when sending messages

When sending a message with my 66i, lately the 66i states weak gps signal and poor location ,do you want to wait to send message or send now? This is in a clear area or even in middle of the Bay. A friend’s 66i is receiving the same message. This has only occurred the past two months. I’m in the Mid Atlantic area of the US.  I go ahead and send the message and the location is accurate.  Why is this happening?

  • I've recently been getting this as well. Did you get a fix?

  • Thank you for letting me know.   No, I did not get a fix.  A friend with a 66i receives the same warning message.  I then send  the message anyway and it sends the correct location.

I called Garmin Support , they have no idea why.  They recommended a full factory reset, which I did after I backed up my courses and tracks, routes.   That was a pain.  Still receiving the warning message after the reset.   I will have to live with it.

  • Given it's on multiple devices and only just started, it does seem to lean towards a faulty software update. I'll raise a ticket in the morning as well

  • Yup. I concur. My device too. Despite "weak signal" message, when I "send anyway" message is sent, location is accurate - all while satellite page shows signal from at least 11 satellites. STW bug. Garmin.... please address.

  • Might be worth raising a ticket with them mate, so they can track how many people have the issue. Mention that you're aware others are facing the same issue.

  • Hi, I've had this error on my 66i for two months. I contacted support. They asked me to send it to them to fix it. In the email they talked about replacing the device. I'm still messaging them to figure out what the issue is.

  • Trying to send inreach messages from the garmin messenger app the messages start and arrive regularly without any warning. so it will most likely be a software problem related to the penultimate update

  • hi guys,

ive been getting this message for the last month or so on my 66i as well. contacted garmin support and they did a swap and sent me a recertified 66i even though my other one was out of warranty (their customer service here in the UK has always been excellent). set this one up and yes still got same message when trying to send messages (poor gps send anyway etc) Also i was under the impression that the  messaging/SOS service was on the iridium satellite network and nothing to do with gps satellites. i contacted garmin and was asked to reset the device, this i did and after setting up the device, all was working well, the first day and then the message was back again. when i check the satellite it says gps accuracy 2.5 meters so i know there is no problem there. i also changed satellite settings from GPS to GPS+GALILEO, the moment i did this my 66i would not hold any satellites and kept dropping off, put it back to GPS only and no problem holding the satellite, reported this to garmin support and the reply is as follows "for this issue it would be by design, you are changing the satellite constellation meaning it will connect to different satellites and each service will offer a defferent level of performance based on where you are. please continue to use WAAS/Egnos with gps". slightly baffled by reply, as ive always had my 66i set to GPS+GALILEO with no problems until recently. Also i use an Alpha 200i for my dogs, this is set to GPS+GALILEO and i have no probelms whatsoever with this device staying connected to satellites(i dont use this device for inreach services obviously as thats on my 66i). I am quite sure garmin have made this issue with the 66i during an update at some point and hopefully will realise and sort it.

  • from time I get the first 66i, I always switched off the Galileo. This did cause mostly the problem of 'lost satellites' and similar. With GPS only, I have no problems even with current fw.
