GPSMAP 66i Page sequence bug?

So I bought a GPSMAP 66i and apart from trying to get used to the whole course/route activity/track thing which I'm finding very confusing coming from an old Oregon 550t, I think I've discovered a bug in the page sequence logic.

I start with this basic page sequence (I've deleted the Main Menu and the InReach stuff) and I have the Page Ribbon Display turned off as as I find the delay annoying.

Map
Compass
Trip Computer
Altimeter

This works perfectly as expected.

Now, if I add  "Active Route" to the end of the list (after "Altimeter") the resulting page sequence is ...

Map
Compass
Trip Computer
Altimeter
Active Route
Altimeter (Duplicate!!)

If I move "Active Route" to after "Compass", the resulting page sequence is ...

Map
Compass
Active Route
Compass (Duplicate!!!)
Trip Computer
Altimeter

Exactly the same thing happens if I replace "Active Route" with "Recording Controls", i.e. whatever is before it in the page sequence gets duplicated after it. And if I add both "Active Route" and "Recording Controls" I get two duplicates.

Note that if I enable the ribbon, it all works perfectly.

Anyone else experiencing this? FW is the latest version, 9.80 BTW.

  • I do not have the problems you described. I have version 9.80. You could try "resetting all" or "deleting all", but you might lose information you wish to keep (in Setup Menu, select Reset).

Regarding the activity, tracks, etc.....tracks are traditional handheld GPS recordings (GPX file type). If you wanted to record a track in the past, you likely had a track recorder option on your GPS menu.

With the 66i and other newer devices, Garmin is trying to integrate other GPS algorithms besides traditional tracks. Courses (FIT file type) come from the fitness watch world. The Route Planner comes from the automotive GPS world (GPX file type).

In the old days, a planned track on a handheld GPS was called a route. The automotive GPS world used the same term for GPS-calculated path, which assumes you start from your current location.

The activity recorder (FIT file type) is from the fitness watch world and replaces the traditional track recorder.

You can now make use of the Connect ecosystem as well as the Explore ecosystem, if desired.

  • I've tried a reset and it didn't help unfortunately. The odd thing is that it's not all pages that do this, just the ones I want to put in the sequence.

    • I could try aScream hard reset I suppose.
  • Yes, you could try a hard reset. I had a problem that was only solved by a hard reset, and a short time later the problem re-appeared. Not important enough for me to keep going through the hard reset recovery process.

  • I would try the factory reset, remember sometimes these bugs appear on one device and not another even with the same software just because the two devices may be configured differently in other settings.

  • For an explanation of the differences between tracks, routes, courses and activities I recommend reading https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=uJZh4J9rF20RVCRNfCtXV9

I don’t have a 66i but I tried out the issue with the page ribbon you describe with my GPSMAP 67, and the same thing happens. So it looks like a bug to me. Best report it to Garmin Support and refer to this forum topic.

  • Tried it on my 67i with current software on it. I get the same results. I’ll report it to Garmin asap.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one! Thanks for reporting it.

  • Thanks for the confirmation of  the bug, I'll report it later.

  • I am unable to duplicate on my 66i or 67i - You probably need to do the master reset.

  • aluns ,  have you noticed that in your first example of this issue, you were pressing the Page button to change pages and you got two altimeter pages. Try pressing the Quit button to change pages, now you get two map pages instead. In your second example you get two trip computers or two compasses depending on which button you use to scroll the menu. Version 8.3 or 8.5 on the 67i. Perhaps this problem has something to do with how some people have their main menu or setup menu pages configured. I hate doing a master reset, probably it will fix it, but as soon as I reconfigure it the same way, I’d bet money it will still have the same bug, it’s happened before a few times. Garmin can’t duplicate it, so until I find how to create it after changing the default settings, they’re not too interested. I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time fiddling with this device in the past to uncover the configurations that create some of these issues. I should be getting paid for it.
