Turn by Turn Navigation with Courses

Most of my experience with Garmin devices is using the Edge series for cycling.  I am trying to figure out if the 66 series devices can do the same turn by turn navigation as the Edges can do with a custom designed courses.

Basically I want a device that behaves the same way as an Edge but has a bigger screen and can be plugged in while using for use on a motorcycle.

I’ve searched all over and can’t find an answer.  Any help is appreciated.

  • I referred back to Owner's Manual and Garmin is terrible about sometimes mixing courses, tracks and routes and sometimes treating them as separate algorithms.

Per the manual, within Routing Settings (not "& Courses") there is a Course Navigation description, which they say is used to calculate routes AND courses.

Then why is input required when one creates a Course? That only makes sense if Course Navigation doesn't apply to Courses. Then why not call it Route Navigation?

I would feel comfortable using Courses for turn by turn navigation as long as the Course Planner knows my choice of navigation option. It seems "Prompted" should be one's default setting in Course Navigation to ensure that happens. The selection seems to apply to Routes as well, so easy enough.

  • I am using the 66sr and have been using routes and courses for the most part in my 4Runner for off-road nav. It does give arrows and next waypoint or road, but it consistently drops out in a short time. Starts with the usual highlighted track but that then disappears in mile. I create my courses in Garmin Connect, importing a gpx, then in GC send it to Device 66sr during synch w/bluetooth. Easy. But no! Each time I have a correct map, but en route it is useless in this fashion. Route or course. I'm down to waypoints now and carefully studying a track before driving with the course or route in the GPS. I'm in Moab and 2 days now just not worked as I'd like and as mapped. But all is not lost. In Bears Ears a few days ago I found... I could simply display the track and have it on the entire time, but it required me to not press OK when selecting a course but moving the curser up and moving the screen as I go with my real positon. Or just loading the course at intervals to verify position. In use I've been 100% frustrated. Why I just came to this forum. I use courses regularly on my Epix. I'm wondering if the activity profiles as a last measure, and at least in Basecamp it doesn't appear an obvious solution. Near Kanab a month ago a simple one turn course ended up taking me 10 miles in the wrong direction. The entire reason I have this GPS is for off road nav for my moto and 4Runner. Had a 62 before that handled this fine and could be trusted. Someone could die! Glad I have my InReach. Lol

  • Hello, you can to turn-by-turn naviagtion using courses however you will see different results depending on how you have the routing settings set. If you are only using the TopoActive mapping turn by turn will not work with the activity types for automotive, motorcycle, or ATV. You could switch it to cycling and it would route it. If you needed the unit to be set to one of those activities you would have to be using CIty Navigator mapping to get the turn by turn routing.

  • Thanks Lesle. That makes sense. I probably made my 4x4 to utilize the ATV activity setting. After looking over routing for each activity I went into my 4X4 "Routing" and changed the "Activity" to Mountain Biking. Then I saw that Tour Cycle has "lock on road" and "Roads and Trails". Will try both out. Also may just set my default map for 4x4 to be my navigable OpenMapChest map. Now At least I have a few things to try.
