Emergency charging for the 66i

I've got about 1/2 battery life on my 66i and am headed off the grid into Burma tomorrow. The micro USB port doesn't work to charge the internal battery/transfer data. Is there a "hack way" to tape wires to the gold contacts on the bottom of the unit to recharge the battery?

In many 3rd word country phone stores I've seen guys charge all types of different mobile phone batteries with a single charger with some contraption that looks like adjustable aligator clips that accomodate any size. I'm wonding if that will work for the 66i exernally (without having to open the unit and take the battery out) and if so, which contacts on the bottom of the unit would I hook the positive & negative the probes up to?

The past few months I was using the Garmin powered mount (PART NUMBER010-12825-00) to recharge the battery. Like the micro USB port, the Garmin powered mount was finicky and I had to really push the unit in tight, fiddle with the cables etc to get it to charge but it stopped working all together as well. At this point, I don't know if the issue is my 66i unit of the powered mount but I don't have the time for a new powered mount to get here to test it.

  • It sounds like a problem with the unit. Certainly, the USB port under the flap will work for both charging and data transfer - with the proper cable. I do not own a powered mount, so I can’t speak to that. You should open a support ticket, but it’s probably too late for the upcoming trip.
