Question about updating InReach info without changing nav info

I use Basecamp to prepare and load exactly the navigation information (tracks, waypoints, etc.) I will need for an excursion off the grid.  In the event I later need to update InReach information, how do I sync it to the 66i without altering carefully prepared navigation information?  An easy answer if I have my laptop, is to (1) copy the nav info to a Basecamp list, (2) sync the InReach info, (3) clear 66i internal storage and (4) copy the saved Basecamp list back onto the 66i.  But I hope someone more familiar with collections management knows an easy more general procedure that would work with or without access to a computer.

  • I don't use Basecamp, so I hope I'm not way off here. I would import the Basecamp nav info into the Explore website, which is where you can also modify the inReach information. Then, you could synch the website to the 66i, using the Explore app. You would need cellular connectivity to do this.

  • Hello You can import the track/route/waypoint into the explore webstie and then sync it over to the 66i using the explore mobile app. Importing Waypoints, Routes, and Tracks Into the Garmin Explore Website // Syncing the Garmin Explore App. Beyond that you can do it through basecamp as you explained above.

  • Thanks Garmin-Leslie.  I never plan to use the collection in the Explore web site.  I understand they are useful to people making simple plans when they have Internet service. My main concern is that nothing in those collections inadvertently affects any of my planning, which is only done in Basecamp.  I'll post something else here today explaining that my original question was probably a misunderstanding on my part.

  • Thanks, all for your replies.

I believe my original post of May 8 resulted from a misunderstanding on my part.  After a  sync to my 66i, all the nav items on my 66i disappeared.  It was not a big problem since I was able to quickly restore them from a single Basecamp list.  But I was worried about that happening in a future situation when I might not have the time or access to Basecamp to fix it.

I was told by Garmin tech support that there was no way anything done on the GPS device would result in a sync wiping the nav data from the device.  I spent some time trying to prove Garmin Tech Support wrong before finally concluding the experts were right. I did a lot of creation and deletion of nav items both on the 66i directly and through Basecamp.  Nothing I did resulted in nav items later disappearing after a sync with the web site.

I sitll don't know why those nav items disappeared from my 66i.  I suspect it was something I did to collections on the Explore web site.  In any case, I'm now comfortable in the belief that it's not likely to happen on a last-minute sync before going into the backcountry.

  • Garmin Explore has duplicated and deleted items from many of my Garmin devices without my consent or desire on multiple occasions.
