re 66i battery

I accidentally left my Garmin 66i on after use and the battery completely drained and stayed flat for 5 days. Will this have permanently damaged the battery? I'm guessing the battery voltage is not actually dropping to zero but just to some minimum operating voltage?

  • "Typically", smart devices protect themselves against battery damage on both ends - overcharging and running to full discharge. Most such devices stop drawing battery power when the battery voltage drops to a level safely above the damage threshold.

That said, I don't know for sure that the 66i does this. Anecdotally, I have discharged the device to the point where it shuts down. As far as I can tell, there was no significant decrease in run time after recharging.

You'll have to open a support ticket to find out for sure.

  • Thanks twolpert, yes I'd like to think that's the case after all it wouldn't be that uncommon to run it completely flat in the field (if one didn't have a power bank or some other means of charging with them). I guess for me it was just the extended period I left it flat. I read somewhere it best to recharge within 24hrs of running flat for optimum battery performance. I'll see how it performs battery wise on my next trip.
