GPS map 78sc How do I send my homeport waypoints to my device?

I connect my garmin gpsmap 78sc to my laptop and am trying to send my waypoints to it but it doesn't receive them.

What am I doing wrong?

  • First thing wrong is you are not providing any detailed information to help someone help you.

When you connect your GPSMAP 78sc to your computer (PC or Mac?), does the device enter mass storage mode?

How are you 'trying' to send waypoints to your GPSMAP 78sc?

    What software are you using?

What is your exact workflow, step by step, once this software is open and your GPSr is connected?

    What buttons do you press?

What menu selections are you choosing?

    In what order?

What is the result after each selection is made?

How are you determining that the waypoints are NOT sent to your GPSMAP 78sc?

Give us details so we can help you.

  • I have a PC I don't know what mass storage mode is.

I have  homeport installed and it has my Columbia river camping waypoints on the screen.

I go to my "library", My collection, and highlight the file Columbia River camping waypoints, then choose device.

When I connect my GPS device to the PC and error code comes up: Error occurred while reading the files.

I click OK to remove the error message then the screen  allows me to select device and I click send.

But nothing gets sent or ends up in the handheld..

Could the issue be the error message? I don't know how to deal with that.

    Thanks.

  • Gonna try to help as much as I can before the mods lock this post for wrong category even though they don't have a category for your device (they will).

If your GPSMAP 78sc is appearing in the left column of HomePort, that is good.

Try dragging and dropping the waypoints to the device in that same column and see if they transfer.

If yes, they can be found in the \Garmin\GPX\ directory on your GPSMAP 78sc. (you can view this in file explorer on your PC)

Another option is to 'export' the desired waypoints to a gpx file on your PC (Desktop, etc.) and then manually copy this GPX file to the \Garmin\GPX\ directory on your GPSMAP 78sc.

  • Can I send you the picture of the error message? It says “an error occurred while reading the following files. 52 files.

  • That is no uncommon, just means there are files on the device HomePort can not recognize.

Try renaming your current GPX folder on the GPSMAP 78sc to 'GPX Archive' then reconnect and see if the error still happens?

  • I’m not sure how to manually copy the file once it’s in my document folder and send it to my device. Thanks- getting closer.

  • Right click and copy the desired GPX file in your documents folder

Open the Garmin device in windows explorer

    Open the Garmin folder

    Open the GPX folder

    Right click and Paste
