RINEX Application

The device allows for RINEX logging. Why does a consumer Outdoor Recreation device have this feature?

I've spent a few hours studying this, and it looks like a consumer can buy some specialized software to process the output, but why spend the money?

There are some free governmental processing sites like OPUS, GAPS and AUSPOS, but they seem to want multi-band data, and I believe the 66i only receives L1 data.

There is a Garmin Support Article which mentions RTKLIB, but it works in a Windows environment, and I don't.

How does the typical consumer involved with outdoor recreation actually use this functionality?

RINEX logs are not really intended for typical consumer use. The point of the exercise is to allow post-processing in order to derive much more accurate position information (than what the unit reported originally). This allows the curious (and technically-oriented) user of a consumer device to derive positions with accuracy somewhere between consumer grade and survey grade devices.

It would make more sense for the 66sr which receives more than one band, but I looked at its specs on Garmin website and RINEX isn't listed (it is for 66i).

Pretty odd.

You are right as to the fact that it isn't mentioned by Garmin that 66sr actually outputs RINEX data. Just have a look at

It makes sense for the 66sr, but not for the 66i, as far as I can tell.

some time ago, I asked one of the professors at the institute of satellite navigation here, he told me that while he uses it with other devices as kind of standard for data collection, it is apparently of no use here.

I assume that this is some software part in one of the subsystems, left here, but of no particular use or ready for future devices or so.

RINEX logging can be useful if one cares about super accuracy.

But the free sites that process the information want multi-band input, and the 66i only receives L1.

So it's a question of whether it's worth buying expensive software to process the logging data yourself. For me, it's not.

I don't think it's a case of selling a solution looking for a problem, it's potentially an advantage for someone already involved in precise positioning that provides another option.

Services like AUSPOS need dual frequency because they are processing static PPP and need it to account for ionospheric issues (as well as needing precise orbit clock data). But for PPP you also have to leave the device sitting there for many hours to collect a single point so it's not that useful unless you were camped overnight.

If you are doing differential to a local base station it's a different story and single frequency will work because the closer the base is the more all those other things such as the ionosphere effect both locations the same so essentially cancel out. And the observations can be significantly shorter or even kinematic (moving). Depending on where you are free base data can be available, and RTKLIB is free...if you were running Windows or could recompile for your OS.

I wouldn't spend money on any software, the data from the 66i is a bit messy and very fiddly to process. One basic issue is simply the lack of a geodetic antenna and susceptibility to multipath that it's carrier processing seems to react particularly badly to it. So unless you had a specific need and were prepared to invest a lot of time it's not worth it.
