Recording Controls Output Format, "FIT and GPX"

In the Setup Menu, under "Recording" and then "Advanced Setup", and then "Output Format", I can choose either "FIT" output or "FIT and GPX" output.

When I choose "FIT and GPX", I expect to see a saved, recorded file within both the "Recorded Activities" folder (FIT) and the "Saved Tracks" folder (GPX).

However, I only get a saved file under the "Recorded Activities" folder.

Why is that?

  • People have lots of needs.  But this is the Garmin Outdoor Recreation, 66i Forum.

If you're using the 66i as a hammer, that's fine, but it is off topic to the forum.

Oh, and if anybody is not using it your way then they are obviously using it as a hammer and it's off topic. I see...

  • I didn't setup this website. It's Outdoor Recreation, look at the top of the page. Garmin on satellite communicators on their website,

    "Satellite Communicators

Go off the grid but stay in touch with two-way messaging by connecting to a reliable satellite network. Perfect for your most remote adventures."

I use it as described on Garmin's website: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/623975

If you use it differently, that's your problem. Deal with it.

  • If you use it differently, that's your problem. Deal with it.

Sorry, I do use the setting for both "FIT & GPX" and upload the GPX to my laptop. And I can't see that mentioned on the website.

But it isn't a problem, it actually works really well.

  • Like I wrote, you can use the device as a hammer, and it may work really well, but it's off topic.

  • It's Outdoor Recreation, look at the top of the page. Garmin on satellite communicators on their website,

we all know that, but still can not see where is your problem

This is device is designed to do the described tasks. It is merging two systems, the garmin fit space and the inreach system developed by delorme company and bought by garmin later. Garmin is now about to integrate the 'external' inreach system into their own.

earlier, garmin was using gpx data format on many things , including outdoor recreation class of devices. Many handheld garmin devices create simply gpx files as output

Only in very recent times, the outdoor recreation devices are merging with the fit based devices. I am not keen on that, but then I do not  need to buy garmin outdoor recreation device. If I do, I agree that it does work in fit environment and all other things are just additional sugar to it.

Last year, I did complain about the forced connection to the fit world before able to use the inreach part seriously. There ware apparently many users feeling the same. So now we have at least just one app on the phone for sync and not two.

There will be however no change in policy by garmin, the devices will remain fit and gpx being secondary output for those who need it. Due to the almost zero competition to garmin in this field, there is not any real choice to use other devices for many professional use. So I have to use those devices for very very serious application which has nothing to do with recreation at all. In fact, I also have to simply pick the gpx files from the 66i as they are and deliver them to GIS specialists some times.

So yes, from my point of use, to have the additional gpx file, with just geo information and nothing else is great advantage for me.

  • OK, the setting for both FIT & GPX is off topic. Right....

  • I've lost count, this may be the 30th time....I know the history of Garmin, the use of GPX and the use of FIT and what the future likely entails.

Can you stop bringing it up? Or is it some sort of compulsion?

Let's try an analogy...you have a button that dispenses water and soda from 2 nozzles into two different cups.

And you have a button that dispenses water into a cup and then soda into a cup from a single nozzle.

In both cases you end up with a cup of water and a cup of soda.

If you only want one cup of each, why have two buttons?

  • The matter is closed. You obviously have some sort of GPS fetish, that's not healthy.

  • I know the history of Garmin, the use of GPX and the use of FIT

OK, I'll add that to the list.

And also that you know we have "some sort of compulsion" and a "fetish".

  • Simply a conclusion based on the observable evidence. If I observe contrary evidence, I'll change my conclusion.
