Exaggerated overall ascent reported

This device erroneously reports overall ascent as nearly twice the actual ascent.

Garmin exchanged the device, but the replacement has the same fault.

They claim they are investigating the problem (Q#:1007700) but there has been no reported progress for six months.

Is anyone else having the same trouble?

  • Yes, I also have the same problem and they have also changed the unit without solving anything. Disappointing.

  • I noticed something similar with the GPSMAP 66s.

Some FW-Versions ago there was a bug with exaggerated ascents. This could be solved by deleting only one trackpoint from a track later on in BaseCamp. That problem has been solved over a year ago.

An issue that hasn't been addressed is that the device reports a peak in ascent and following in descent when it is used by pressing buttons. This was extreme in a first device and is now a little bit better with an exchanged device. But I still see when looking at the graph for altitude in BaseCamp when I did something on the device. For me it looks that the barometer is too sensitive.

  • Thanks for your reply. I'm interested in hearing more about the problem you describe. Particularly the influence of buttons on the device. I have a suspicion that the misreporting I see is aggravated by button use.If you leave the device alone and view it at the end of the trip the error is less than when you complete the same walk viewing the device many times (by pressing buttons). I think you're describing something I also see. A burst of errors after pressing a button?

  • Yes, leaving the device alone results in valid heights without any peaks.

I described the issue some months ago, but Garmin decided to close the topic, as I reported to a GPSMAP 66s in the 66i-Forums... See here: https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/inreach/f/gpsmap-66i/279162/66s-peaks-in-ascent-descent-every-time-the-device-is-used

In the attached file you see the peaks. They match when I grabbed the device. The Terrain was flat.

I got an exchange device some weeks ago, now the peaks are a bit lower (maybe not 10m but 5m). Better, but not a real solution.

  • Hi, thanks for your reply. What you are seeing is not the same as my problem. In mycase the elevation plot graph is correct but the figure shown in the data field 'Total Ascent' is wrong. Looking at your plot suggests to me that the barometric sensor is behaving as a microphone (an engineer would say it's microphonic). It would be interesting to see if simply tapping the device aggravated the fault
