Pretty sure that maps for non-automotive devices are never updated for free. You must buy it again every time. Check the compatibility pages for the maps, then drill all the way down to the terms and conditions.
Edited to add: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/legal/map-download/
The info is seriously buried on the web site. I notice that there IS an update link for TopoActive Europe - but it essentially says "let's see what's available" - NOT "yes, you can have one". I did not pursue it further since I don't have the original map.
Maps that come WITH the device apparently are updateable.
this is not so clear
I have my 66i bought in Europe. Recently, I thought there will some useful FW update in GExpress when I connected it, but all TopoEurope were updated automatically and I did not pay for something extra.
But as twolpert states, our 66i came with the world map and 3 TopoEurope, so they were contained at purchase, therefore are probably updated sometimes.
How is there any confusion?
If the GPSr included TopoActive pre-loaded, they will be updated free of charge.
If TopoActive maps were not pre-loaded but purchased separately, they will not be updated free of charge.
