GPSMAP 66i - Suddenly turns off

I have a GPSMAP 66i. I have it updated with the last version 8.80. I have some problems lately.
a) When I am changing pages and I get 'Recording Controls' sometimes (no pattern I found) suddenly freeze the screen (any buttom works) and inmediatly the device switch off.
b) In two times, during a navigation when I go to 'Recording Controls' and then into the thrid option (at the top of the screen, -current activity-) the arrow to pan does not move on the screen.
Could anyone help me? Thank you very much.

  • Hi again.

The problem continue with my GPSMAP66i.

You can see here some videos to see what happen.

After to call Garmin Technical Service (Spain) and follow their instructions to erase some files within device the problem continues.

Then I called again to insist on the problem. Finally, they sent to me a new device (the first one was in garranty).

But what surprised me was that the new device has the same behavior. It locks up and shuts down when I access "Recording Controls" (in the Page Sequence)

I have had the opportunity to verify this behavior with another person with the same device. He did not have the problem but when he included "Recording Controls" in the Page Sequence his device switched off twice in some minutes.

Apparently it occurs when "Recording Controls" is included in the "Page Sequence". This is just my intuition. (I have to say that in the past I have always had the "Recording Controls" in the "Page Sequence" and it has never given me these problems.
Right now I am waiting an answer from the Official Technical Service of Garmin Spain.

I would appreciate any help, comments or suggestions.

    MANY THANKS!

    Ángel.

  • I think there is a general problem with V8.80. My 66i just shut down in several situations (Birdseye download (every time), just scrolling through the menu (sometimes)…; haven’t recognized a system for this (yet).

  • By default (in its initial configuration), the device does not include in the carousel of the “Sequence of Pages” the access to “Registry Controls”. I have always had it included and it has never given me problems until last Nov / Dec. The modification of the accesses included in the “Sequence of pages” can be carried out through the sequence: Menu> Settings> Menus> Sequence of Pages> Page tape display.

Suspecting that the problem might be related to accessing “Registry Controls”, I have tried two things:

    1) Remove access to "Registry Controls" from the "Page Sequence". In this case, the remaining way for me to access the "Registry Controls" is Menu> Registry Controls. RESULT: At the moment, the incidence of blocking and shutting down the unit has not been reproduced.

    2) Keep access to "Registration Controls" in the "Page Sequence", BUT deleting the carousel that appears at the bottom of the screen (Menu> Settings> Menus> Page Sequence> Page tape display> Disabled) RESULT: From At the moment, the incidence of blocking and shutting down the unit has not been reproduced.

    Another important aspect to consider.

I spoke with a friend who has recently (less than a month) purchased a GPSMAP 66i unit. He has already gone out and used the device outdoors and it works correctly, it has not given him any problems. What we did on his device was to add access to "Registry Controls" in the "Sequence of Pages" and in the time that the conversation lasted it was blocked and turned off twice.

Based on all of the above, apparently it could be a problem related with Software / Version (V8.80)

I've sent the devicce to Technical Service (Spain) and I am waiting an answer from them.

  • Hello again.

After sending again to Garmin Technical Service (Spain Iberia) my device, I did not have any explanation and a new device has been replaced again (second time). I cheked that the bad functioning also occurs in the new ones, I informed them again, and the 'answer' is a new RMA to send them AGAIN the device. The problem is not in the device itself, the problem is in the Software.

I find unacceptable there is no explanation, analysis and no answers. Only interchanges the device and changes with new ones, I showed them that was not the solution.

    Incredible the  Garmin 'Service'

    Any help or advice?

  • Just wait for the next update. There is nothing more you can do so stop whining

  • Do you know when new update is expected? Thank you.

  • They do not publish this information,  but I would not expect it to be very long with issues like these.
