on the 66i, I can choose for activitracking
walking
boating
hunting
fishing
cross conutry skiing
alpine skiing
what is the difference between them? What should change when I select instead walking for example hunting?

'Automatic" is some kind of magic that only the Garmin programmers understand. In my experience, if I want points which are predictable, I set it to use a fixed interval. This is not to say that I have ever encountered automatically recorded points that do not adequately describe the track. Just that I'd rather use a method I understand.
OK, now I can confirm that those 'types' of activity tracking have no functionality at all.
The only difference when using them is that they are marked with different icon in the explore appp on the phone.
Example of todays 100km drive:
one device was set to 'walking' and has now a walking man as symbol
the other was set as 'flying' and the result is that it is makred with an icon of an airplane
the density or distance between the collected points is however identical
It is probabaly just for th icons, so users who sort all into many collections can see on the phone what trip was that last week
