what is activity type?

on the 66i, I can choose for activitracking

walking

boating

hunting

fishing

cross conutry skiing

alpine skiing

what is the difference between them? What should change when I select instead walking for example hunting?

  • Not sure it makes any difference. The activity type is recorded with the activity. It shows up when you view the activity later. But I have never noticed any other difference,

On wearables, some activity types are profiled to NOT use GPS. For example, the elliptical activity does not. There are a lot of other settings associated with activity type on a wearable - Mostly because they are considered fitness devices. Never looked for settings like that on the 66i.

  • I checked the device over the weekend. I do not see any settings for individual activities. This does not necessarily imply that there are no "hard-coded" differences among them. For example, it's possible that different activities have different intervals for logged points. I don't know for sure one way or the other, but it's possible.

  • ok, I have two 66i in my hand, so next trips I will try to switch other modes and compare. I will report my findings then.

  • somehow I have received copies per e-mail with comment from Leslie, and replay from twolpert. but it is not visible here

yes I confirm, I am not talking here abt device profiles. For this, I am not using any of the preconfigured profiles, I have created my own one according to rules of our organization.

In this context the 'Types' of activity are meant, which do not affect the profiles.

It might however set rules of how many activity log points are collected at what intervals when certain activity type is selected.

There is also a type 'flying', this could be different then walking. However so far it is somehow difficult to understand what can be the difference between walking and hounting or boating.

  • The exchange with Garmin-Leslie was to point out that you were interested in activity types, not profiles. Suspect that Garmin-Leslie agreed and deleted the exchange to avoid confusing things further.

  • @skyeye yes, I do apologize I removed the comments as they were not helpful to this issue.

  • all  ok,  i was just confused

meanwhile testing those settings, will report findings later

  • first test not very meaningful.

I set one device to walk and other to flying, I thought this will be some big difference

so far could not discover any significant differences in automatic logging function , about same number of logged points

  • I rather suspect that you're going to find that that activity influences routing functionality more than anything else. Even that will be somewhat hard to isolate since the result depends on the maps you have selected at the time, the route itself, routing options, and finally the activity type. For IR purposes, I would not be surprised to find that it makes no difference at all.

  • I was just curious, because it is a function to be selected for activity recording, this is where the menu for it resides.

I found one difference, when I select 'other' then the resulting track is marked with a kind of wheel when looking at the list on the phone.

I am saving activities and then converting them on the 66i to tracks and then sync them to the server.

This gives me on the server similar view as with my delorme or mini.

I can set it to time interval as on the mini, then all should look the same.

But I noticed that the log points are collected by some 'KI' if set to automatic. So I thought I will find some explanation what this types are for in terms of activity recording.
