Collection Manager with Route Planner / Waypoints / Tracks

It's supposed to work as you describe it. I don't have enough information on my device to try it. 

According to Garmin (different thread on the same 66i topic), this article on the 7x0i Collection Manager applies to the 66i as well.

Hi SotaJim, Did you ever get to solve this issue? We are new to the Garmin 66i and are having the same problem as you describe. We must misunderstand something.

Hi….so I haven’t tested this, but this is what I think the answer is:

1)  the collections manger in the 66i GPS does NOT work as a “file system” …..so you cannot control the collections on the 66i itself.

2)  rather, you control what is shown on the 66i via the Garmin EXPLORE app. 

3)  therefore, you build your collections on your desktop, sync them to your cell phone’s EXPLORE app.

4) Then when I am out hiking, I Bluetooth the collection I want onto the 66i….

again, I’ve not tested this!

I might add, that on the 66i... contrary to what it says in the above link to the Montana device, disabling collections does not remove them from the respective menus... Waypoints, routes etc. So the toggles really and truly do nothing at all, as far as I see. And the 66i instructions don't seem to even mention the collections manager.

I have been testing this extensively,  and can say that data from any collection I disable on my GPSr is no longer displayed on my GPSr, and data from collections that are enabled is displayed. 

Test for yourself with a new collection with only a single waypoint,  track or route to see that it works as advertised,  then carefully examine each of your current collections in explore to determine why all data is always visible for each collection. 

Either you already have the same data loaded to the GPSr in separate files, or the data is duplicated across multiple collections. 

Also test by only enabling one of your collections at a time in the Explore Mobile app, then enable and disable that collection (should be the only collection available) on the device and report your results. 

Doesn't work for me. I have various collections... trig points... waterfalls, weirs, huts... all with different icons. If I toggle collections on in collections manager, they are all visible (as you would expect). If I toggle them all off, they are all still visible. If I toggle one on, and the rest off, they are ALL visible. If I go into 66i waypoints, and delete all waypoints, they disappear (as you would expect), when I sync them again in Explore app they reappear (as you would expect), but toggling them off in collections manager has no effect. If I create a single way point in its own collection and sync that... then toggle off that collection in collections manager, it does NOT disappear. This is with a brand new 66i that I upgraded to 8,80 firmware, and latest Expore app 3.0 Android. And a new explore.garmin.com account.

If I toggle the various collections visible/invisible in explore.garmin.com, it works as one might expect... If I toggle off the waterfalls, the waterfalls disappear. If I toggle off the huts, the huts disappear. If I toggle off the trig points, the trig points disappear.

I tried renaming Garmin/SQL and Garmin/EDM as you suggested in another thread and rebooting. When I did that, all the wayponits disappeared. I resynced the device, and all the waypoints appeared again. As before, toggling any or all of them off in collections manager had no effect, they remained there.

I might add, as I mentioned in another thread, that when I mapshare my map to other people, all my waypoints... even the ones in collections that I did NOT share, are visible to them. The collections themselves do not appear in the list of collections that they can see, but the icons/waypoints within the collections that they are not supposed to be able to see, are visible to them.  In fact, the collections I have shared with the "M" in explore.garmin.com have no waypoints at all, and the "Unorganised" collection, also has no waypoints. So it's hard to imagine what makes explore think it is appropriate to show these waypoints to shared users. So the mapshare page has 3 collections visible, the "Sent to Mapshare" collection, and two others that I deliberately shared. All 3 collections have zero waypoints next to the little flag. Despite that, under "Library" it lists 126 waypoints. It's probably an unrelated bug... but then again, when two Garmin products can't seem to stop showing all waypoints, you've got to wonder if they are related.

If you only send one collection from explore to the GPSMAP 66i, does toggling that one and only collection on the device have any affect?

Are you seeing 'all data' from other collections that were never synced to the device?

It's impossible to sync only one collection, and toggle it, because if you select "Sync Selection" in the Explore app, it insists on a "Primary Collection", which cannot be toggled.

Having said that, when using "Sync Selection", everything started working as I would expect... If I sync everything in "Sync Selection" by enabling every collection, then the toggling of collections on the 66i starts working as one would expect.

Thus I would suggest that this is a bug that exists in the "Sync Everything" option. One other thing that makes no sense to me is why Sync Everything doesn't insist on a primary selection, like the Sync Selection does. It seems to forcibly create a "Library" collection to serve this purpose. But that raises the question... what if one is swapping back and forth between Sync Everything and Sync Selection, you have a "Library" collection appearing and disappearing. Seems like a terrible design choice. Also "Library" doesn't seem exactly like a Primary Collection, "Library" includes everything, your primary collection just includes things  you create on the device. This is unnecessarily messy if one was switching between those options.

I also realised that the mapshare bug I mentioned above does indeed seem to be related to this bug. Once I selected "Sync Selection" on the 66i, and synced, then the explore web site's share page when you click the "M" gained an extra checkbox: "Library", which is effectively a "share all" option. The fact that this checkbox isn't visible when I'm doing "Sync Everything" seems wrong for a lot of reasons. Firstly for the obvious reason that silently sharing all your data without telling you and without letting you turn it off, is a shocking security issue. Secondly, because to me at least, it seems weird that one's explore.garmin.com behavior is so intimately connected to the settings on a particular device that share options depend on how one of your devices is configured. What if one had multiple devices? What if one had no devices? Just seems odd. I think explore.garmin.com shouldn't be so tightly coupled with a particular one of your devices. Thirdly, because the "Library" collection is a collection that forcibly appears on your device when one is using "Sync everything", but "Library" is an option that appears in explore.garmin.com when one is NOT using "Sync everything". Maybe some programmer got his boolean logic reversed? At least be consistent, and have "Library" something that exists on explore.garmin.com when you have "Library" on your device. Though I think the whole idea of "Library" is flawed, the sync everything option should just use a regular collection for its primary collection... even if you call it "Library", and leave there, don't destroy it when changing between sync everything and sync selection, just leave it as your default primary collection.

And if nothing else.... document the whole thing. I'm left to guess what the designers of this system were thinking when they came up with this.
