'spider net' in expedition mode

When stationary, and using expedition mode, I had the impression that 66i should go to some kind of deep sleep and check position somehow, but less frequently and thus minimize the known 'spider net' around the location. Meaning on the other side also it will store less positions and less activity tracking until it finds that it is really moving.

Currently however, I have th impression that the 'spider net' is even more dense and activity tracking more intensive during expedition mode then in normal mode.

Is there an explanation?

  • I don't think you are actually IN expedition mode. The device is still awake, which is probably because of the way you enabled expedition mode. See the battery saving thread for more info on this.

And yes, ALL Garmin handhelds suck when it comes to suppressing the spider web track when motionless, especially in challenging conditions. This also messes up some of the statistics, such as maximum speed. Other manufacturers know how to suppress this. Garmin either does not know or somehow believes that you want this junk in your track.

  • The 'spider-web' phenomenon is all but non existent when 'Auto Pause' is enabled, and/or when using a Multi-Band GPSr, such as the GPSMAP 66sr.

  • yes, I am currently testing the auto pause as well. When used in normal operation however, each time 'pause' is recognized, the 66i gives a acoustic signal and I did not find out how to switch it off without disabling all tomes as well. Simply disturbing.

When 66i stationary and in expedition mode, it still produces spider-web each time it wakes up, let says for sending the 4-hour stationary track point.

I assume that while it gets positions which jump around 300m, the unit believes it started to move and will record all this as it would be really moving.

Well yes, multiband is different story, but we need inreach ;-)

  • >The 'spider-web' phenomenon is all but non existent when 'Auto Pause' is enabled<

I have again tested this, but this seems to be more of a legend then reality. After one day, 66i outside, Auto-Pause ON, expedition mode, tracking when stationary 4h,

dense spider-web area on the map, covering everything
