I was just finished with a geocaching hike and was in the menu to turn satelite reception to DEMO and the unit locked up. I can't shut it down or change the screen.
How do I shut it down or restart?

So far my strategy consists of letting the unit expend its battery and die seems to be working. Some time in the next day or so I should be able to recharge the battery and restart the unit.. but will it seize up again?
You have to press on/off button for round about 10 seconds...
I had to do so - after a freeze ...
Hope it will work.
So the unit shut down on its own and I was able to power it up. But I now can not charge it.
I had tried that when it initially froze but it did not respond.
Leave it plugged in, preferably to a wall wart (but a PC will do), for a while. If you run it flat, it takes it a bit of time to acquire enough charge to show the charging screen.
If it does not recover in a couple of hours, a call to tech support is in order. The original symptom was unusual. Failure to charge is even worse.
Yes, this happened to me too. My solution: connect to PC via USB. The screen did then change to the usb symbol, from that on I could switch it off-on again
BTW thihs seems not to be so seldom. Having 4 66i for abt a week now, this happend twice already ech time on differen unit. No idea how to solve it in the field then appart form waiting until batt is finished.
Looks like 66i is rather risky equipment for serious applications.
I tried both a wall charger and the usb port on my computer. Both would turn the unit on, so I know it was recognizing power, but neither would charge the unit.
Eventually I contacted tech support and went through a series of diagnostics. The OS was current which ruled out needing updating. Eventually they exchanged the unit outright and I'm now setting up the new unit.
All of the new generation of Garmin iR devices are somewhat unstable (judging from forum posts). Applies to both the 66i and the 7x0i. Can't say about the 86i marine unit, but would guess it's the same. IMO, the main issue is the merging of relatively simple iR functionality into very complicated, full-function handheld GPSrs. Behavior that is acceptable in a recreational GPSr is not acceptable for a safety device. /soapbox
