Garmin 66i Trail Walked and Trail recorded does not match

Went on a Karamatura Track Huia in Auckland yesterday.

Total of 7km walk, very short and not many detours you can take from the path.

The trail recorded on my Garmin 66i seems to jitter about.
It was a one way track to and back from the waterfall.

Even during the trail, the arrow keeps jumping to different locations.

It feels like those old GPS with bad frequency.

Are there any fixes to this? Or will I need to send it back for a refund.

Help required please.

  • Were you using Galileo and SBAS?

    How was the GPSr carried?

What obstructions line the path you traveled?

What track log recording settings were you using?

Can you share the GPX file?

  • Typically, this is because you are using a "longish" activity recording (not iR tracking) interval. OR that you have not sync-d the activity to the server.

inReach tracking points are transmitted via the Iridium satellites in more or less real time. These points won't be any closer together than 2 minutes (and maybe more, depending on the minimum tracking interval available on your plan and what tracking interval you elect to use).

Activity points do not appear on the web map until you sync the device (usually via the Explore app for the 66i). Activity points are usually much, much closer together, providing a smoother path. Again, this depends on the interval you choose. But even the default "automatic" interval provides very good fidelity for the path you actually travelled.

Looking at the track above, it is also possible that you encountered challenging conditions (nearby bluffs, narrow defiles, or whatever) at one or more points. I'm making assumptions about that because there are relatively large divergences at one or two places. Challenging (multi-path-prone) conditions will affect both the activity recording and the iR track.
