Using Garmin 66i for Trail

Hello.

I have recently bought the Garmin 66i and while I did my research before purchasing this product, I must say Garmin did a heck of a job to make this as complicated as possible.

I watched HikingGuy's guide on youtube and started using Caltopo.com to create the trail -> import to garmin explore -> link to mobile's garmin collect -> sync to garmin 66i device.

Seems like a long process.

Based in New Zealand, the GPS came with the Australian and New Zealand Topo map but the trails I imported doesn't show the elevation nor the ETA to destination.

The elevations are shown on my mobile's Garmin Collect.

Have anyone experienced something similar and know how to fix this problem?

All and any advice will help.

  • Like any Garmin handheld, you can place .gpx files directly on the device. Just connect the device via USB, the use Windows Explorer (or the equivalent Mac utility) to copy files to the appropriate folder on the device. Dismount the device and you should have the track/route on the device.

  • Good choice of device if you are going remote but I would steer clear of trying to use Garmins mobile apps to do anything useful.

I'm in Aus and both our devices get the the open source based Topo Active built in. I use the optional far more detailed Topo Aust & NZ map and various Windows apps (including Garmin's BaseCamp & older Mapsource) to transfer GPX to and from the device as already suggested.
