66i Tracks vs Actual Path

Maybe this has already been discussed but I haven't found any answers.  I have a new 66i.  Last thing I had was an original Oregon 400t.  The Oregon could connect via a cable and download my saved "hikes" onto GoogleEarth, etc. and I could see/save where I had been.  I am, essentially, trying to make the same thing happen with the latest technology and am assuming this should all be syncing to my Explore account.  What I get on my Explore account on the Map is a "connect the dots" picture of the every 10 minute waypoints sent by inReach.  What am I missing?  This should be so simple.  How can I record where I have been (actual path, not just discreet points of every 10 min) and display it on some kind of map?    Thanks in advance.

  • Those tracks should be available on the device, when connected via USB, just like they were with your old Oregon 400t!

  • What you see are the “sent. Points - delivered via satellite in more or less real time. In order to see the “logged” points, you must sync the device. You can do this via the Explore app. After you sync, the full track should be visible as an activity. Subject to the usual collection visibility constraints.

  • Thanks for the responses.

Yes, I woke up this morning and realized what Atlas said.  inReach and the GPS are sort of two different things.  So the points the GPS is sending in real time are the inReach only points.

I also realized what Twolpert said.  I can use the old fashion cable to sync through my phone right to my PC and Explore (haven't tried that yet)   But I do have Garmin connect on my phone and via bluetooth connected to the 66i.  I know they are talking cause the phone immediately starts giving me the fitness BS when I turn on the 66i.  I do hit sync on the phone after I finish my "hike" and it looks like it is syncing but I cannot find where to see the track on my phone or how to tell it to send to explore or maybe it is and I am looking in the wrong place on Explore.  Am I using the wrong app?  Or do I need to sync from the phone?

  • Garmin Connect and Explore are two different universes. You will find the activity synced via GCM at connect.Garmin.com.

  • So I found connect and it has some of my information but actually less than Explore does.  I keep syncing everything but nothing shows up.  I did a one mile walk around my large rural "block" this am and the track is clearly saved in my phone.  I just cannot get this information to go anywhere.  Any step by step suggestions?  This is crazy.  I manage IT for a medical practice.  Not my primary job as I am actually the CEO but I understand everything IT.  Why is this so difficult?

Should I just revert to the cable? not sure I know how to make that work either.

  • I do everything by cable as I find Explore to be a total disaster beyond unreliable. I avoid Explore at all costs.

  • Sync with the Explore mobile app. Be sure you are logged into the correct account if you have more than one. You need a data connection for the phone - either WiFi or allowed cellular data. The device needs to be powered up AND paired with the phone in order to sync. The sync is two-part: phone <> device and phone<>web. Both parts should occur automatically. The last sync time for the device will show on device page. The last sync time for the web will show on the account page.

Note that pairing with the phone requires the use of GCM AND Explore. Because why? Just because.

  • I tried the phone route and I must be missing something as I still could not get a sync to work.  So, I connected to my PC via cable and immediately the GPS decided it needed a major update that took 6 hours to complete (my internet speed is somewhat limited).  It was at night so I let it run.  In the AM the update was complete and my tracks were in the Connect app and now in Explore.  Progress.!   I'll continue to work on the phone route as I'd like to be able to do that if traveling, etc.

    Thanks for the help.

  • I assume that was a map update. You ought to be able to opt out before it dives into one of those. To facilitate this, you may want to configure Garmin Express to NOT run in the background (which also prevents it from starting up anytime a Garmin device is connected). Note that you have to repeat this configuration exercise each and every time you install an update to Garmin Express. Express helpfully /sarcasm re-enables this feature every time it updates itself.
